Just about any conversation about the Boston College Eagles football program begins with a reference to Doug Flutie’s Hail Mary pass to defeat a heavily favored University of Miami team in 1984. Considered one of the signature moments in the history of college football, the play was immortalized in 2008 with a Doug Flutie statue outside Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill.
A Proud Tradition
Since the Boston College football program was founded in 1892, the Eagles have played in 22 Bowl Games including an astonishing streak of 12 consecutive bowl bids between 1999-2010. The program’s high water mark was the undefeated 1940 season. 1940’s “Team of Destiny” compiled and 11-0 record including a victory in the Sugar Bowl over the Tennessee Volunteers . Though the Eagles claimed a National Championship, in the days before the BCS and soon-to-come playoff system, that claim has ben the subject of some debate and the NCAA does not list the Eagles as the Champs.
Over the course of the last century, the Eagles have developed some of the best rivalries in college football including the “Holy War” with Notre Dame, a long-held, soon-to-be reignited feud with Syracuse University after they join the ACC as well as a relatively new rivalry with ACC foe Virginia Tech.
Long known as one of the best producers of Offensive Linemen for the NFL, the list of BC Eagles who’ve made the jump from the college ranks to the pros is long. In addition to linemen Tom Nalen, Damien Woody, Dan Koppen and Chris Snee, current Atlanta Falcons star quarterback Matt Ryan, Carolina Panthers Defensive Rookie of the Year winner Luke Kuechly and cancer-survivor/New York Giants LB Mark Herzlich all starred in Chestnut Hill.
A New Era Begins
Following two straight seasons without a Bowl bid, head coach Frank Spaziani was replaced by former Temple coach Steve Addazio. The New England native is already making headlines by recruiting one of the best classes in the nation in his debut season. While the Eagles face stiff competition from conference heavyweights Florida State, Clemson and Miami, Addazio and company have one of the most exciting QB-WR combinations in the country in Chase Rettig and Alex Amidon.
