Early Life & Influences

Bon Jovi has cited, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, The Animals, Van Halen and The Beatles as influences.

The founder of the band, Jon Bon Jovi was always passionate about music. In his teens, he performed gigs with John Bongiovi and the Wild Ones. Then, Bon Jovi found a job at WAPP 103.5 FM “The Apple” where he would write and sing jingles for the station. During this time, he recorded a song, Runaway which the radio station played. This led to the track getting airplay around New York and soon Bon Jovi started to get noticed.

Jon Bon Jovi decided to form the band, Bon Jovi in 1983 with his friend, David Bryan. The duo added Alec John Such, Tico Torres and Richie Sambora to the lineup and began playing gigs in local clubs and bars. They were then discovered by Derek Shulman who helped them land a recording contract with Mercury Records.

After one year, Bon Jovi released their first full-length self-titled studio album. Although the record failed to perform on the charts, it still managed to sell more than a million copies in the United States. Following the release of ‘Bon Jovi,’ the group performed as an opening act for Scorpions in the US and for Kiss in Europe.

In March of 1985, they began to work on their second album and after a few months came out with ‘7800° Fahrenheit.’ The record charted in the US, Australia, Finland, UK and Japan. It was also awarded platinum certification by the RIAA and Music Canada.

Breakthrough & Recognition

Bon Jovi hit it big when they churned out their third studio album, ‘Slippery When Wet’ in 1986. The record was so successful that it spent eight weeks at the top of the Billboard 200. This studio effort became their first and so far, only diamond selling album. Moreover, it offered two singles, Livin’ on a Prayer and You Give Love a Bad Name both of which peaked at the first spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The former went triple platinum in the United States and was also nominated for the American Music Awards for the ‘Favorite Pop/Rock Single.’

‘Slippery When Wet’ was also listed in the book, ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.’ On top of that, it also made it to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of the ‘Definitive 200 Albums of All Time.’

Bon Jovi released another number-one record, ‘New Jersey’ in 1989. It sold over eighteen million copies globally and brought them massive success throughout the world including Japan where the record won two Japan Gold Disc Awards. The record also yielded five Top 10 hits, which set a new record for the ‘Most Top 10 Singles Spawned by a Hard Rock Album.’ ‘New Jersey’ was also approved by critics as AllMusic gave it four and a half stars out of five.

The success of ‘New Jersey’ encouraged Bon Jovi to release more music. They then released albums like, ‘Keep the Faith,’ ‘These Days,’ ‘Crush,’ ‘Bounce’ and ‘Have a Nice Day’ all of which sold millions of copies in the United States. These albums featured many iconic songs like, It’s My Life and Bed of Roses all of which were written by the principal songwriters of the band, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2009.
