Jack Micheal Antonoff grew up in the suburbs of New Jersey, where he lived with his parents until the age of 28. As a child it wasn’t just one particular artist or a specific genre that he was drawn to. Antonoff found inspiration in the unapologetic attitude evident in the music of the 90s’ era. Like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Antonoff aspired to make music that shaped cultures.
While he was working on a music record, he realized that almost all his favorite albums were ones in which either the artists were singing about their relationships, upbringing or culture. Overall, he liked music that told a story. Antonoff transformed his New York apartment into a studio and decorated the same with baseball trophies, Star Wars memorabilia and posters that he had collected as a kid. He even went to the extent of getting his studio wallpaper designed like the one he had in his room as a child.
The Fun Steel Train & Antonoff
Antonoff achieved commercial success and critical acclaim as part of both bands, Fun and Steel Train. He also produced the Grammy winning song We Are Young while he was a member of Fun.
While the musician was touring alongside Fun, he began working on a new music project and kept it a secret for some time. On February 18, 2014 his first solo single I Wanna Get Better came out along with the launch of the official Bleachers website and social media profiles. The public announcement of the launch of Bleachers came via a Facebook post by the Brooklyn music studio Mission Sound in May, 2013.
With the popularity of the song, many believed that Antonoff had secretly been planning to part ways with Fun and go solo. However, in an interview he clarified that the Bleachers project should not be interpreted as his departure from the band Fun. He said that he would continue to be a member of Fun and that the new project was just another aspect of his music persona.
Bleachers debut music album titled Strange Desire was released via RCA Records in July of 2014. It comprised singles such as I Wanna Get Better, Rollercoaster and Shadow. The song I Wanna Get Better topped the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and reached the tenth spot on the Hot Rock Songs chart, becoming Bleachers biggest hit single till date. Its music video was directed by filmmaker and actress Lena Dunham (also Antonoff’s girlfriend at the time). In the song Rollercoaster, the singer can be heard reminiscing about a past love. The track was described by the well-known Variance Magazine as a ‘brilliant summer anthem.’ Other popular songs on the record include Like a River Runs and Who I Want You To Love. Strange Desire reached the second spot on the Billboard 200.
Bleachers followed up the success of its debut solo record with Gone Now in June, 2017. Released via RCA Records, the album was named among The 20 Best Albums of 2017 by The Independent. It was inspired by Antonoff’s memories of his sister’s death from cancer and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The lead single titled Don’t Take The Money was described in the following words by Atwood Magazine: “an epic uplifting pop-rock anthem ultimately about how when love is real, it’s worth everything that comes along with it.” The song reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and Top 20 on the Hot Rock Songs chart. Its accompanying music video featuring Antonoff as a soon to be groom was again directed by his then girlfriend Lena Dunham. The record consists of a total of twelve tracks each one of which is based on a story.
