Musto has not been long in the industry but he has made his presence felt with both his singing and song-writing skills. He has had an interesting beginning. When he started out, it was as a record producer under his real name Matthew Musto. Before he came to the limelight as a rap artist in 2012, Musto was inclined towards underground indie music, however his main interest remained R&B music.
At the age of 16, Musto dropped out of high school to pursue music. He signed up with a punk band but did not stay with it for long. Soon he was writing his own electronic folk oriented songs. Musto would put them on MySpace and it was from there that his manager Tabari Francis noticed him who has remained with him since.
The Big Break
2012 changed the course of things for Musto. It was the year that that he co-wrote the Justin Bieber’s smash hit song “Boyfriend”. The song received mixed reviews and was a commercial success. It landed on number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold more than three million copies. With it Musto became a known name in the music circles.
The song brought him to the forefront and cashing in on the new found success, the same year Musto immediately started recording and came up with his debut EP titled Foreplay. It was released on April 20, 2012. The same year, a few months later he released his debut mix tape as well. Sex was released on October 31. Both albums were released under the name blackbear. Sex featured songs that he had made with co-writer Mike Posner, James Blake and Maejor Ali. The next two albums Deadroses and Help were released in 2015. Mansionz (with Mike Posner) came out in March 2017 and his latest effort digital druglord released in April 2017.
Life After Stardom
The singer describes how stardom changed his life. After “Boyfriend” he became a big spender. Suddenly he was rich at a very young age of 21. And when you have money rolling in, it can get to you. Musto says that he didn’t come from a rich background so when cash started flowing in he started spending like crazy. He travelled with friends, drank and did everything he wanted. But then this lifestyle got to him. It took a life-threatening case of pancreatitis to make him think over his life style. As a result, he quit drinking.
While in hospital the singer wrote lyrics for many of his songs for his new full length album, digital druglord, The title track of the album "do re mi" went on to be a big hit. It was the first song by blackbear to debut at number 87 on the Hot 100. The album itself made an entry at number 14 on the Billboard 200.
In his short career span, he has already collaborated with several big names of the industry such as G-Eazy, Justin Bieber, Mike Posner, Pharrell Williams, Maejor Ali, James Blake, Machine Gun Kelly, Rivers Cuomo, and Linkin Park.
The singer hasn’t been afraid to reinvent. Today his music enjoys a loyal fan following that loves his dark, sultry and dangerous music. Blackbear’s music has been described to be similar to that of Justin Bieber and The Weeknd. While blackbear still writes songs for others but now he has the luxury to be more selective. Though the singer has been associated with labels such as Island, Interscope and Beartrap, he still prefers the independent route. He says he prefers it that way because he wants to be in charge of things.
