Early Life & Influences
Proverbial line-crosser, intelligent, courageous and funny – that’s Bill Maher for you.
Born, bred and raised as a New Yorker, Bill Maher was exposed to current affairs and news at quite an early age. His father was a news editor and worked for a long time at the NBC studios. Unlike most children, Maher’s conversations with his father revolved around current issues – be it political, economic or religious. Along with his sister, Bill Maher was encouraged to think freely and voice his opinions without any pressure. His questioning nature, coupled with gregarious personality and natural comedic flair helped Bill Maher groom as a political comic.
While his father remains his biggest influence, Maher has also been inspired by the likes of Johnny Carson, George Carlin and Robert Klein. In fact, he cites a comedy album by Carlin as his “holy grail”.
After graduating from Cornell University, Bill Maher was ready for the comedy scene. On his way up the comedy ladder, Maher cut his teeth at the New York’s Catch a Rising Star and made way through the standup world by appearing on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson”.
He was rewarded with appearances on several late night comedy shows and Bill Maher’s career as a standup comedian had officially begun.
Bill Maher Career Breakthrough
Comedy Central approached Bill Maher with “Politically Incorrect” in 1993 and he grabbed it with both hands. It ran successfully on Comedy Central till 1997 after which ABC started airing it till 2002. The Emmy Award winning half political, half comedy show flourished under Maher. His sharpness and knowledge encouraged a diverse set of guests to appear on the show and it boosted the late-night ratings.
However, Bill Maher, ABC network and “Politically Incorrect” suffered a setback in 2001, when after the tragic 9/11 attacks Maher released a controversial statement. Commenting on President George W. Bush’s characterization of the attackers as cowards, Maher said on the show, “We have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it’s not cowardly”.
Bill Maher received a lot of backlash on this and even though ABC denied it, Maher believes it was the reason the show got cancelled in 2002. But something good came out of it as Maher found his calling. A year later he returned with “Real Time with Bill Maher”, another political satire by the comedian.
Bill Maher’s Notable Work
Running successfully since 2003, “Real Time with Bill Maher” is currently in its 15th season.
