Early Life & Influences
Big Sean has been making fans dance for almost a decade now. In an interview with Complex, he revealed artists that influenced him:
“I really liked Nas. I thought his style was really good. Definitely Tupac and Biggie. To this day, I still rock a Rolex ring, obviously I got that from Tupac and Biggie. Also Jay Z, Kanye, and Pharrell too. Growing up, all these guys had an impact on me. I see a version of them in myself today."
Born in Santa Monica, California, as Sean Michael Leonard Anderson, Big Sean grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where the hip-hop music was booming at the time. After graduating from Cass Technical High School, he became associated with WHTD, where he would show his rapping skills by taking part in a rap battle contest organized by the radio station.
In 2005, Sean heard that the Grammy winner, Kanye West was giving an interview at 102.7 FM. Big Sean rushed over and performed some freestyle rap for him. West was more than impressed by what the young rapper had to offer. Sean also gave West a demo tape and two years later, he was signed by West’s record label, GOOD Music.
Big Sean then hit the studio to record his first mixtape. On September 30, 2007, he put out ‘Finally Famous: The Mixtape.’ It featured a hit single, Get’cha Some and he also released the track’s music video, which has been viewed more than one million times on YouTube. Two years later, he spawned his second mixtape, ‘Finally Famous Vol, 2: UKNOWBIGSEAN.’ It featured thirty songs out of which Million Dollars and Supa Dupa stood out.
Big Sean then dropped his third mixtape, ‘Finally Famous, Vol. 3: BIG’ on October 20, 2010. If featured some of the most famous names in the industry like Chris Brown, Bun B, Chip tha Rapper, Chuck Inglish, Mike Posner and Ty Dolla Sign. This mixtape also received a lot of airplay in the United States and brought his way a lot of recognition nationally.
Breakthrough & Recognition
His first three mixtapes had set the wheels in motion for him to become a huge star. It was time for him to reach the next level and Big Sean then released his first studio effort, ‘Finally Famous’ on June 28, 2011. The record peaked at the twentieth spot on the Canadian Albums Chart and spawned three singles out of which My Last, Marvin & Chardonnay and Dance (Ass) were blockbuster hits. The record also earned him a Bet Hip Hop Award nomination for the ‘Album of the Year.’ It also received a lot of acclaim from the critics, with Rolling Stone stating,
“Finally Famous is a choice summertime rap record, complete with bright, breezy synth beats and cameos from Chris Brown and Mr. West himself.”
On August 27, 2013, Big Sean released his second album, ‘Hall of Fame’ and it turned out to be another hit. It not only made XXL’s list of the ‘Best Albums of 2013’ but also peaked at the first spot on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. A couple of years later, Big Sean returned with his third full-length studio record, ‘Dark Sky Paradise.’ It received great response from the fans. It charted in multiple countries around the globe and became his first studio effort to top the Billboard 200.
‘Dark Sky Paradise’ recorded platinum level sales in the US. The critics also gave it positive reviews and it was declared the 15th best album of the year by Billboard. It offered five singles out of which Blessing, a collaborative effort with Drake, not only went double platinum in the US but also won a BET Hip Hop Award for the ‘Best Collabo, Duo or Group.’
Notable Work and Album Releases
Big Sean has released four studio albums so far. Besides his studio efforts, Sean has also released one collaborative album with Jhené Aiko titled, ‘Twenty88.’
His most recent record, ‘I Decided’ hit the stores on February 3, 2017. It became his second album to climb to the first spot on the Billboard 200. In addition, the album also became a number-one hit in Canada. ‘I Decided’ has been certified gold in the U.S. and features guest appearances from Eminem, Jeremih, The-Dream, Starrah, Jhené Aiko and Migos. It also received three and a half stars out of five from AllMusic.
