Beyoncé was born in Houston on September 4, 1981. Inclined towards music since an early age, she enrolled into Parker Elementary School and also attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. At eight years of age, Beyoncé formed a music group Girl’s Tyme with childhood friend Kelly Rowland and a number of other young aspiring female artists. The all-girl music group then took part in Star Search which was the biggest talent show on national television at the time. After they failed to win the contest, Beyoncé’s father transformed the group into Destiny’s Child.
With the group’s first self-titled album release, it became one of the most popular acts in the R&B circuit. With their second record, the group scored its first number one single ‘Bills, Bills, Bills.’ Besides the record also comprised the smash hit ‘Say My Name.’
Along with enjoying the steady success of Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé began exploring other projects as well. She made her acting debut with an appearance on MTV’s Carmen: A Hip Hopera in 2001 after which she was seen in the spy parody Austin Powers in Goldmember alongside Mike Myers in 2002.
However, the turning point in her career came with her debut solo album titled ‘Dangerously in Love.’ The record received both commercial success and critical acclaim. It sold millions of copies and also bagged the prestigious Grammy in five categories. The record featured appearances by renowned guest artists such as Jay-Z, Sean Paul and Missy Elliot.
The album’s lead single ‘Crazy in Love’ preceded the release of the record. It hit the stores in May 2003, while the record was released in June. On July 12, 2003, Beyoncé became the first female music artist to reach the top spot on both the singles and the albums chart in the UK and the US simultaneously.
On her 25th birthday, Beyoncé treated the fans with her second solo studio album, ‘B’Day.’ Comprising hit songs such as ‘Déjà vu’ and ‘Irreplaceable,’ the album was a massive success. Its first week sales exceeded 41,000 copies, which is the highest debut week album sales by Beyoncé.
In 2008 Queen Bey married Jay-Z in a small private ceremony in New York City. In the same year, she came out with her third album, ‘I Am…Sasha Fierce.’ The newly wedded couple promoted the album together and the record sold about eight million copies around the world. Inspired by alternative rock and folk, ‘I Am …Sasha Fierce’ received eight Grammy nominations and won in five categories. Beyoncé’s ‘I Am…World Tour’ had her perform a total of 108 shows all of which were sold out.
In her next album ‘4,’ Beyoncé attempted to bring the traditional R&B back to contemporary music. Besides singing, she also co-wrote the songs on the album and served as its executive producer. The album became the singer’s fourth consecutive solo record to top the Billboard 200. Besides, it received a favorable response from the critics as well.
Beyoncé’s live performance at the Super Bowl in February 2016 won her huge acclaim. She joined Bruno Mars on stage at the Pepsi Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show where she performed the single ‘Formation’ from her new album ‘Lemonade.’ Because of its politicized lyrics, the single got a lot of attention.
‘Lemonade’ hit the shelves in April of the same year and sold 485,000 copies in its first week of release. With this album, Beyoncé broke the record she previously tied with DMX and became the first music artist to have her first six studio albums top the Billboard 200.
Awards and Accolades
Over the course of her career, Beyoncé has sold a hundred million albums as a solo artist and another sixty million as part of the group, Destiny’s Child. This feat makes her one of the best selling music artists in history.
She has bagged a total of 22 Grammys so far and is the most nominated female artist in the award’s history. At the 52nd Grammy Awards, Beyoncé walked away with wins in five categories, setting the record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night. The record was matched by Adele two years later.
Beyoncé has been named the Top Radio Songs Artist of the Decade by the Billboard as well as the Top Female Artist of the 2000s. She was presented with the Millennium Award in 2011.
In 2014, Beyoncé became the highest-paid black musician in history. She was ranked among the most powerful females in the entertainment industry by Forbes in 2015.
