BBVA Compass Stadium – The Formation
The Houston based American professional soccer club, the Houston Dynamo was formed in 2005. The team needed a home stadium and therefore initially considered three locations, Pearland, Northeast Houston and Sugar Land to construct their own playing field. However, in 2010, the team selected a 30-acre land situated at the South Rice Avenue and Westpark Drive, near the city limits of Bellaire to build their stadium.
Though the plan was initially resisted but nonetheless, the Houston City Council signed the agreement on April 7, 2010. Soon, the then general manager and president of the Houston Dynamo, Oliver Luck announced that Populous will be designing the venue. Populous is one of the biggest architectural firms in the world that has not only built three major sporting venues in Houston including, Toyota Center but has also designed many international stadia like the Wembley Stadium.
The BBVA Campus Stadium broke ground in February of 2011 and in mid-2012, the venue opened its door with a kick-off game between the Houston Dynamo and the D.C. United. The home team won 1-0.
