Starting His Career
Hailing from Santa Cruz, California, Bassnectar was born in 1978. Growing up in a Bohemian environment, he found his love for visual arts in his early years and started to make movies with his father’s camera at the age of ten. When he reached his teens, Bassnectar’s interest shifted to music and a lot of that had to do with his uncle who bought him recordings of Latin and African music along with a set of hand drums. At the same time, he began to follow legendary bands like Nirvana and N.W.A.
Ashton then decided to learn guitar and founded his own metal group. He was poised to take over the world with his band but in 1995, Bassnectar attended his first rave concert which instilled the love for dance music in him. The entire experience was so enthralling for Ashton that he went on to attend more rave concerts and even taught himself to DJ. He soon began to produce beats by using Opcode Systems Studio Vision Pro and in 2001, Bassnectar was asked to remix Michael Franti & Spearhead’s hit single, Skin on the Drum. Later that year, he came out with his mixtape, ‘Freakbeat for Beatfreaks’ which was released by his label, Amorphous Music.
In 2002, Bassnectar dropped his latest mixtape, ‘Beatfreak Bohemia’ which contained seventeen songs including, Gramma Jams, The Swindle, Slo Monster and Party Poopers. He soon began to attract fans with his unique style of music and was seen performing at many festivals including, Burning Man. Ashton then churned out his debut ten-track studio effort, ‘Motions of Mutations’ in 2003 which was followed by three more records, ‘Diverse System of Throb,’ ‘Mesmerizing the Ultra’ and ‘Underground Communication.’ All of those albums brought him mild success.
Bassnectar’s career started to blossom when his sixth studio LP, ‘Divergent Spectrum’ came out on August 2, 2011. It landed at the forty second and twelfth spot on the Billboard 200 and spawned three hit singles, Upside Down, Above and Beyond and The Matrix. He also spawned the remix of Ellie Goulding’s Lights and Gogol Bordello’s Immigraniada in the same year out of which the former crossed twenty eight million views on YouTube. Ashton then released his seventh studio record, ‘Vava Voom’ on April 10, 2012. It received three and a half stars out of five from AllMusic and peaked at the second spot on the Top Dance/ Electronic Albums.
Rising to the Top
After taking a year off, Bassnectar put out his next studio project, ‘Noise vs. Beauty’ in June of 2014. It was approved by the critics and reached at the first spot on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums. The record also featured guest appearances by Rye Rye, Donnis, Simon Morel, Seth Drake and Jenna Sousa. To support this record, he set out on the ‘NVSB Tour’ and partied with the fans in cities like New York, Austin, Pittsburgh and Las Vegas. In 2015, Ashton spawned his ninth studio LP, ‘Into the Sun’ which climbed the forty sixth spot on the Billboard 200 and was supported by two singles, Into the Sun and Speakerbox. Both of those tracks landed at the thirty second and thirty sixth spot on the Dance/Electronic Song chart respectively.
