The Barenaked Ladies came to life in the late 1980s in Canada and since then the world has witnessed their stunning evolution firsthand. There aren’t too many musical acts who diverge from a successful formula but Barenaked Ladies did that and that too multiple times over.

Their journey began as an acoustic ensemble but the subsequent years saw them encompass almost every genre that there is. It did not matter if it was rock, hip hop or pop, Barenaked Ladies were ready to try everything. The experimentation has worked for them too, especially in their native Canada.

Now they have announced a tour and will take the stage in various US cities in the summer. Joining them on the ride will be KT Tunstall and Better Than Ezra. It promises to be one of the most talked about tours of the year and you can be a part of it by simply getting your Barenaked Ladies Tickets here.

The Start

Steven Page and Ed Robertson laid the foundation of Barenaked Ladies in the form of a duo. The two went to the same school but were not friends yet. Their friendship began when they met at a concert headlined by Peter Gabriel. The two began talking and found out that they had a lot of things in common. The bond between them grew stronger as time passed and it went up a notch or two when they started to work as counselors at the Scarborough Music Camp in Ontario.

Then the two went to a Bob Dylan concert but did not have a lot of fun. In the middle of the show they began to act like rock critics. They also came up with a few band names and one of those was Barenaked Ladies.

Robertson was part of a cover band too at that point in time and had to take part in a battle of the bands. Unfortunately, the group had broken up and Robertson forgot about the gig. He then got a call from the organizers of the event to confirm the band’s participation a week earlier and Robertson improvised and told them that the group’s name had changed to Barenaked Ladies.

Robertson asked Page to join him and the two of them played for the first time on October 1, 1988. Interestingly enough, they did not take part in the battle of the bands and began to play on their own while the other groups set up their equipment. They played every song that they could think of and the event went quite well for them. As a result of that they were asked to open for The Razorbacks, a very popular local band.

The First Steps

Barenaked Ladies came out with their first ever tape “Buck Naked” in the year 1989. Robertson and Page also used to incorporate elements of comedy to their performances on stage. They began to follow Corky and the Juice Pigs and credit them for their funny presence on the stage.

Robertson and Page then asked Jim Creeggan and Andy Creeggan to perform with them. Barenaked Ladies came out with “Barenaked Lunch” in the year 1990 and the Creeggan Brothers featured on the demo tape. Andy however quit the band shortly afterwards and his place was taken by Tyler Stewart. Barenaked Ladies then hit the road for their inaugural tour of Canada.

They released “The Yellow Tape” in the year 1991 and it was also their first ever commercial release. It was a demo tape that they sent to almost every prominent label in Canada without any success. Barenaked Ladies then began to sell copies on their own and sold quite a few of those. That resulted in generating quite a lot of buzz and people began to turn up at music stores looking for the record.

That word of mouth improved the sales by a considerable margin and then Victor who was Page’s father set up Page Publications, an independent label to distribute and manufacture cassettes. The sales continued to increase and The Yellow Tape became a huge hit eventually. Barenaked Ladies began to get quite a lot of attention too and their tracks became famous. The tape was eventually certified platinum in Canada, becoming the first indie demo tape to achieve the feat.

Barenaked Ladies Take Off

Barenaked Ladies signed with Sire Records in 1992. They came out with their first major studio album “Gordon” in July of 1992. It was also a big critical success and received four stars out of five from AllMusic and three out of five from The Rolling Stone Album Guide.

Their second album was titled “Maybe You Should Drive” and it hit the music stores on August 16, 1994. The record received three stars out of five from AllMusic, Encyclopedia of Popular Music and The Rolling Stone Album Guide. It also became the band’s first record to chart in the US and went double platinum in Canada.

“Born on a Pirate Ship” was their next album and it hit the stores on March 19, 1996. The album did very well and was certified gold in both the US and Canada. It was also Barenaked Ladies’ first album to get an RIAA certification.

From Stars to Superstars

After appearing on numerous television shows and collaborating with other artists, Barenaked Ladies hit the studios once again to work on their next album. The result was the sensational “Stunt.” The album was released on July 7, 1998 and was a huge critical success. It received four stars out of five from both AllMusic and Encyclopedia of Popular Music. It also received three and a half stars out of five from The Rolling Stone Album Guide and all five out of five from Sputnik Music.

The album was a huge commercial success too. It went on to chart at the third spot on the Billboard 200 and at the ninth spot on the Canadian Albums chart. Stunt also charted in Australia and New Zealand. The album went on to be certified quadruple platinum in both the US and Canada.

“One Week” was the most successful single from the album. It went to the top of the US Billboard Top 40 Mainstream charts, the US Modern Rock Tracks and the US Billboard Hot 100. The track also charted in other countries and sold in excess of a whopping five million copies.

Barenaked Ladies then released “Maroon” in 2000 and it went straight to the top spot in Canada on debut. The record peaked at the fifth position on the Billboard 200. Maroon was certified platinum in both the US and Canada. On the critical front it earned three stars out of five from AllMusic and the same from Q. It received three and a half stars from Rolling Stone.

Barenaked Ladies have released seven albums since then with the last one “Fake Nudes” coming out on November 17, 2017. The album charted in Canada, the US and Scotland. It also received four stars out of five from AllMusic and ABC News.
