Since 2004, Band of Horses have become one of the biggest indie rock bands in the US. It seems like yesterday when their debut album Everything All the Time came out. Since then they have only become bigger and better with each studio album.

Band of Horses do things their way and at their own pace. They just do not want to be part of the rat race that is so prevalent in the music industry. Their last album hit the stores in June of 2016 and did pretty well critically and commercially. They have been regulars on the annual touring calendar and it does not look like they will buck the trend any time in the near future. Book your Band of Horses tickets if you want to see them live in concert the next time they hit the road.

The Early Years

It was Ben Bridwell that formed Band of Horses back in 2004 when his old band Carissa’s Wierd broke up. They first got some recognition when they went on to open for Iron & White. They then released an extended play titled “Tour EP” which they sold at their shows and through the label Sub Pop’s own website.

Band of Horses then released their first studio album titled “Everything All the Time” on March 21, 2006. The record went on to peak at the twenty fifth and thirty first spot on the US Billboard Heatseekers Albums and the US Billboard Independent Albums charts respectively. It also charted in Norway and Sweden.

Everything All the Time was a critical success too. It received three and a half stars out of five from AllMusic as well as Slant Magazine. Uncut and Blender both deemed it good enough to merit four stars out of five.

Band of Horses released their second studio album titled “Cease to Begin” on October 9, 2007. The album peaked at the thirty fifth spot on the US Billboard 200. It also cracked the Top 40 in Denmark and Top 20 in Norway.

Cease to Begin also received a lot of critical acclaim. The record got four stars out of five from AllMusic, Blender, The Guardian, Q Magazine, Rolling Stone and Spin. It also made it to a number of end-of-year lists.

Galloping Away

Following that, Band of Horses went onto play at major festivals and spent a lot of time on the road. They released their next album “Infinite Arms” on May 18, 2010. The record peaked at the seventh spot on the US Billboard 200 and at the twenty first position on the UK Albums chart. It also went on to chart in Sweden, Norway, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Greece, Denmark and Canada among other countries. Infinite Arms also received a Grammy Award nomination for the “Best Alternative Album.”

Infinite Arms enjoyed a lot of critical acclaim too. It received four stars out of five from AllMusic, Q, Spin and Uncut. Rolling Stone gave it three and a half stars out of five and so did Sputnikmusic.

Band of Horses hit the road the same year and not only performed with the likes of Pearl Jam and Snow Patrol but also showcased their skills at major music festivals. They flew to Europe in the first two months of 2011 and then went for a short tour of the US. They returned to Europe during the summers to perform in multiple festivals. 2012 saw them tour the South American continent for the first time.

Mirage Rock and Why Are You OK

The title of Band of Horses next album was “Mirage Rock” and it was released on September 18, 2012. The record peaked at the thirteenth spot on the US Billboard 200. It also went as high as the fourth spot on the US Top Alternative Albums charts and the seventh position on the US Top Rock Albums chart. The album also charted at prominent positions in other countries.

The Guardian gave Mirage Rock four stars out of five while it received three and a half stars from AllMusic, American Songwriter, Slant Magazine and Rolling Stone. The record also made it to Rolling Stone’s and American Songwriters lists of top 50 albums of 2012.

Their most recent album was titled “Why Are You Ok” and it came out on June 10, 2016. The album went on to peak at the nineteenth spot on the US Billboard 200. It also cracked the Top 40 in the UK, Switzerland, Spain and Sweden. It also went to the second position in New Zealand and to the twenty second spot in Australia.
