About Aziz Ansari

Early Years

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, on February 23, 1983, Aziz Ansari was raised in Bennettsville where he first attended The Marlboro Academy and later went to The South Caroline Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics. His brother Aniz Adam Ansari is a well-known writer and video editor.

In the year 2000, Aziz Ansari relocated to New York to study marketing at the Stern School of Business of New York University. Ansari was a huge fan of Chris Rock while growing up and cites him as his major inspiration in the field of comedy.

Following his graduation in 2004, Ansari began hosting a comedy night at the UCB Theatre with Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer. This was titled Human Giant - the inspiration for the MTV comedy series of the same name that began in 2007 and ran for two successful seasons.

Early Contributions

Aziz Ansari’s very first performance on screen was in the TV series Uncle Morty’s Dub Shack in which he played a bricklayer. He then made a small appearance in the comedy film School for Scoundrels which also starred Billy Bob Thornton.

In the year 2007, Ansari played the role of a fruit seller in the TV series titled Flight of the Conchords. Having gained exposure and experience both on television and movies, Ansari produced and starred in different roles for his own sketch comedy show Human Giant. Made in collaboration with fellow comedians Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel, the series was a massive success. Although they were offered a third season, the group turned it down to pursue other opportunities.

Ansari went on to make small appearances in movies and sitcoms such as The Rocker and Worst Week. His screen presence was impactful and earned him many more offers over the following years. He was seen in notable movies including Observe and Report, Funny People and I Love You, Man.


The breakthrough for Ansari came when he got the lead role in the political comedy series called Parks and Recreation. The show began in April of 2009 and the audience saw Ansari as Tom Haverford, a very confident and ambitious government employee. He went on to play the main role of the show for all its seven seasons. Ansari was highly praised by the critics for his performance in the show. Entertainment Weekly named him as among the Breakout TV Stars of the year and TV Guide described him as Scene Stealer. Besides he was placed at the top spot on the TV MVPs list of Yahoo! TV.

Ansari’s popularity reached new heights with the 2012 comedy tour Dangerously Delicious.  The same year he lent his vocals for a character in the movie titled Ice Age: Continental Drift.

Ansari continued his voice over work by contributing in animated TV series such as Wonder Over Yonder, The Venture Bros, Adventure Time and Ben 10 : Omniverse. He also appeared in Aziz Ansari: Buried Alive, a stand-up comedy film that was released in 2013. The same year he featured in the 2013 movie Epic, filmed in Philadelphia.

In the year 2014, Aziz Ansari was seen in a small role in the comedy movie Date and Switch. It starred well-known actors such as Nicholas Braun, Zach Cregger and Dakota Johnson.

Ansari also gave voice-over in the 2015 comedy drama TV series titled Master of None. He also hosted one of the episodes of the popular talk-show Saturday Night Live along with rapper Big Sean. 

In addition to his work as an actor, comedian and voice-over artist, Aziz Ansari is also a well-known writer. He co-authored a book about relationships with sociologist Eric Klinenberg. Titled Modern Romance: An Investigation, it provides research and information about the various changes that have taken place in the nature of romance and relationships in recent years. Ansari is reported to have received a sum of $3.5 million in advance for this book.

Ansari loves food and has formed a group called The Food Club with his friends Jason Woliner and Eric Wareheim.
