How the Journey Began
The hard rock band came together in 1999 in Huntington Beach, California. The two founding members of the band, vocalist Matthew Sanders and guitarist Zachary Baker were high school friends. Their shared passion for music brought them together. To complete their band’s lineup they roped in bassist Justin Meacham and drummer Jimmy Sullivan and began recording.
Rise to Stardom
The first album by the young band was titled Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. It was released in January 2001. At the time, the band members were still in their teens but were deeply committed to their music. While the debut album got them attention, it wasn’t a major breakthrough. The first album was re-released in 2002. The follow up album Waking the Fallen featured a more sophisticated sound. With this effort and their constant touring the band began to make their space in the rock world.
Like the debut album their second album was released on a small label and it wasn’t until they signed to Warner Bros. Records that the Avenged Sevenfold got their big break. With Warner Bros., A7X came up with their third effort titled City of Evil on June 7, 2005 and it changed the course of things for them.
The platinum album can be said to be responsible for getting the band international recognition. As soon as it was released, it peaked at number 30 on the Billboard 200 chart. Within the first week it had sold more than 30,000 records. The album featured the smash hit single Bat Country which charted at the top of several rock charts. Critics were all praise for the band’s new work and fans went crazy.
The Journey Continues
Avenged Sevenfold at this point were touring heavily but with the new found fame they decided to give touring a break and make new music for their fans. The band’s next album was self-titled, which was released in 2007 and went on to chart at number four spot on the Billboard 200.
For the next few years A7X kept busy with touring and did covers, until the death of their drummer put a stop to things. James Sullivan known as The Rev passed away in 2009 due to drug overdose. This was a tough time for the band. Years later, they would reveal that at this point they even thought of disbanding. But this idea was dismissed and soon A7X got a new drummer and continued with their music journey. The lead vocalist in an interview said, “Our goal right now is to just get kids to hear the record, because we want them to remember the Rev." With this as their goal they continued with the album Nightmare that they had started with Sullivan-the Rev.
The rock band emerged strong from the tragedy and has continued to give multiple hit albums and tours since. With each album the focus has shifted more towards guitar melodies and clear sung vocals. Fans have embraced this shift and this has earned them some new fans as well.
Their fan base grows with each album and every time they hit the road it seems the audience has multiplied. From the look of things, they have everything going for them, a good label, loyal fan base, record sales and a busy touring schedule. Everything suggests that the rock band is here to stay.
