The Early Years of August Burns Red
August Burns Red was formed in 2003. The group began to jam in drummer Matt Greiner’s house and soon, they went on to play several gigs around Lancaster. The band then thought of recording their first EP, ‘Looks Fragile After All’ which was released by CI Records in 2004. Following the release of their extended play, the lead vocalist Jon Hershey quit the group to start his own band, Bells. Hershey was then replaced by Josh McManness and in 2005, the group signed with Solid State Records via which they spawned their debut studio effort, ‘Thrill Seeker.’ Although, the record didn’t chart but it managed to collect positive reviews from the likes of Absolute Punk and Jesus Freak Hideout.
In 2006, McManness and bassist Jordan Tuscan left August Burns Red and their spots were taken by Jake Luhrs and Dustin Davidson respectively. The group later came out with their second studio album, ‘Messengers’ on June 19, 2007. The album was classified as melodic metalcore and received three and a half stars out of five from AllMusic. Moreover, it reached at the first spot on Top Christian Albums chart. A year later, the group started touring and played shows throughout North America and Europe. They also recorded their take on Britney Spear’s platinum selling single, ...Baby One More Time which was included in the compilation record, ‘Punk Goes Pop Volume Two.’
August Burns Red kicked off 2009 by releasing their second EP, ‘Lost Messengers: The Outtakes’ on February 24th. This extended play consisted of songs which failed to make it to the final mastered version of their second album, ‘Messengers.’ After five months, the band dropped their third studio LP, ‘Constellations.’ It landed at the twenty fourth spot on the Billboard 200 and earned them a nomination for a Dove Award under the category of ‘Rock Album of the Year.’ In addition, the album contained a song, Marianas Trench which appeared in the video game, ‘Rock Band 2.’
Taking Their Career to New Heights
In the summer of 2010, August Burns Red announced that they will be going on a break to write new material for their next studio project. Almost a year later, the group revealed the title of their fourth studio effort and also put out four songs, Empire, Internal Cannon, Divisions and Poor Millionaire before they released, ‘Leveler.’ The record landed at the eleventh spot in the United States and marked their third album to debut atop the Top Christian Albums chart. Plus, it received 4/5 stars from Alternative Press and Christian Music Zine each.
The quintet quickly churned out their fifth studio LP, ‘August Burns Red Presents: Sleddin’ Hill’ in 2012. It was their first holiday and instrumental record which was composed of thirteen songs. The album couldn’t make much of an impact in the United States but that didn’t slow them down as they spawned their sixth record the following year called, ‘Rescue & Restore.’ It put them in the right direction and helped them take their career to new heights as the album not only landed at the ninth spot on the Billboard 200 but also gathered positive feedback from the critics including AllMusic who stated,
“From start to finish, Rescue & Restore is an incredible leap for the band that should not only please the August Burns Red faithful, but opens them up to a wider audience of metal lovers.”
They Are Unstoppable
August Burns Red singed with Fearless Records in 2014 and began writing songs for their seventh studio effort, ‘Found in Far Away Places.’ The album turned out to be a massive success in the U.S. and was charted in other countries including, Australia and Canada. It also made the Rock Sound’s list of the ‘Top 50 Releases of 2015’ and spawned two hit singles, The Wake and Identity out of which the latter peaked at the thirty fifth spot on the Hot Christians Songs.
After taking two years off, the band’s eighth studio LP, ‘Phantom Anthem’ hit the stores on October 6, 2017. The record did not disappoint and was approved by the fans and critics alike.
