August Alsina is a famed American rhythm and blues music artist, best known for the single I Luv This Shit. The New Orleans based singer is signed to Def Jam and has carved his niche in the music industry in a very short span of time. Among his other notable music endeavors are the 2013 EP Downtown: Life Under the Gun and the 2015 record titled This Thing Called Life.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September, 3, 1992, August Anthony Alsina Jr. does not come from a musically inclined family. He was inspired to sing when he watched Lauryn Hill’s rendition of His Eyes on a Sparrow in the musical comedy movie Sister Act II. In 2007, at just fourteen years of age, Alsina began uploading videos on YouTube, starting off with a cover of the song Hypothetically by R&B and soul singer Lyfe Jennings.
Alsina had a rather troubled childhood. His father August Alsina Sr. as well as stepfather suffered from crack cocaine addiction. To keep him clean, Alsina’s mother Sheila Alsina relocated Alsina Jr. to Houston, Texas. Later on, Alsina began to have arguments with his mother who did not want her son to take up music as a professional career. As a result, Alsina returned to New Orleans. He was only sixteen years old at the time.
He started high school but soon his frustration and unhappiness led him to get involved in drugs. Although his elder brother Melvin La’Branch III took care of him, he was himself struggling in the streets to make ends meet. He was later shot dead in what remains an unsolved murder mystery.
August Alsina’s music career took off when he caught the attention of an Atlanta based production and management company, NNTME MuCo., also known by as the name of Noontime. In 2011, the young musician moved to Atlanta and began giving his undivided attention to his music career.
In October of 2011, Alsina released a mix-tape comprising six covers. However, this collection was untitled and the singer made his official debut with the mix-tape The Product in April of 2012. This comprised a total of twelve songs. Besides this, Alsina also released two more mix-tapes the same year. These include Throwback and August Alsina University.
In February of 2013, Def Jam Recordings released the single I Luv This Shit. It was the first single from Alsina’s first EP Downtown: Life Under the Gun. Featuring renowned American rapper Trinidad James, the R&B song is about parting with alcohol and drugs. Few months later in May, a remix version of the single featuring rapper Birdman came out. Later in the month, August Alsina treated the fans with another mix-tape The Product 2.
August Alsina’s debut EP titled Downtown: Life Under the Gun hit the shelves on August, 20, 2013. It features a total of eight songs with appearances by Rich Homie Quan on the song Ghetto, Kidd Kidd on Downtown and Currensy on Let Me Hit That. Ghetto turned out to be the most added song on urban radio on the week that ended on December, 12, 2013.
On January 14, 2014, August Alsina released the song Make it Home featuring Jeezy. This was the lead single from his debut studio record. With the release of the song, it was disclosed that the debut record would be titled Testimony. It came out in April of 2014 and generally received favorable reviews from the critics.
Testimony debuted at the second spot on the Billboard 200 and its first week sales in the US exceeded 65,000 copies. The collection featured a total of fifteen tracks with guest appearances by well-known music artists such as Pusha T, Fabolous, B.o.B and Yo Gotti. Upon reaching 500,000 sales, the album received Gold certification and was later declared Platinum when it hit the 1,000,000 mark. To promote the record, the New Orleans crooner began his first headlining tour titled Testimony Live in August, 2014. Alsina dedicated the album to his late brother Melvin.
Alsina’s second studio record This Thing Called Life was released in December, 2015. It debuted at the fourteenth spot on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 40,000 copies in the US, in its first week alone. It’s lead single Hip Hop was released earlier in April, 2015. It was produced by Knucklehead who also worked on Alsina’s most successful single I Luv This Shit. The music video for Hip Hop premiered at the BET Awards in June, 2015. The album also consists of two promotional singles; Dreamer and Been Around the World both of which were produced by Knucklehead.
