Borrowing their name from a speech delivered to the UN General Assembly by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1953, Atoms for Peace is a super-group in every sense of the term.
Thom Yorke’s Second Act
As the principal songwriter and voice of Radiohead, Thom Yorke is, by all accounts, one of the most influential musicians of all time. And though Radiohead continues to tour and record prodigiously, somehow Yorke has found the time and bandwidth to construct Atoms for Peace, an experimental rock/electronic group with some of his heavy-hitting contemporaries.
Comprised of Yorke and producer Nigel Godrich of Radiohead, the incomparable bassist Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beck and R.E.M drummer Joey Waronker and Mauro Refosco of Forro in the Dark, Atoms for Peace came together in 2009 at LA’s Echoplex in a show that attracted A-listers like Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Spike Jonze and music mogul Rick Rubin.
Atoms for Peace’s first full-length LP Amok was released by XL Recordings in February (2013) and, as anticipated, the result is ethereal, pulsating and all kind of cool. With Yorke’s signature vocals, stellar musicianship and mind-bending creativity, Atoms for Peace isn’t the overwrought artifice that many so-called super-groups become, this is the real deal.
