Atlantic Starr was an extremely successful group that thrived in the 1980s on a type of music that is dominated by solo artists.
Atlantic Starr was established with nine members in 1976. They had a bassist, drummer, percussionist, flutist, trumpeter, keyboardist, trombonist, guitar player, saxophonist, and several singers. That type of size and breadth is nearly extinct in today’s music scene, and very few bands these days take advantage of many of such a variety of talents and sounds.
But Atlantic Starr made it work, tirelessly performing in night clubs (both New York City and Los Angeles) in the late 1970s before eventually making it big with a collection of huge hits just a few years later.
A Transformative Band
Atlantic Starr’s first three albums (Atlantic Starr, Straight to the Point, and Radiant) saw both critical acclaim and fan appreciation, but their fourth album, Brilliance, released in 1982, was their first to be certified Gold. It featured the songs “Love Me Down” and “Circles,” and it rose all the way to #1 on the United States Billboard R&B chart.
After 1983’s Yours Forever, the band released As the Band Turns in 1985, and it was a monstrous success. The album went Gold and also featured the song “Secret Lovers,” one of Atlantic Starr’s biggest hits.
Their 1987 album All in the Name of Love went Platinum, and over the next 10 years they released five more albums.
