Early Life & Influences

Influenced by synth pioneers, Jean-Michel Jarre and Klaus Schulze, Armin Van Buuren, a Dutch, started to make dance music when he was 14. In 1995, he enrolled himself at Leiden University where he studied law but soon decided to become a DJ and before long, he was seen playing gigs at Club Nexus. A couple of years later, Van Buuren churned out his track, Blue Fear which received moderate success in the United Kingdom. He then released another hit single, Communication which peaked at the eighteenth spot on the UK Singles chart.

In 2001, Van Buuren launched his own weekly radio show, A State of Trance. At the same time, he began to release music with the fellow Dutch DJ, Tiësto and soon, United Records signed him to the label. After two years, he put out his first studio album, ’76’ which performed well in his country of Netherlands. The record earned positive response from AllMusic and included seven collaborative tracks with artists like, Ray Wilson, System F, Justine Suissa and Victoria Horn.

He later founded his record label in the summer of 2003 with Maykel Piron and David Lewis called Armada which released his sophomore record, ‘Shivers’ in 2005. It climbed the twenty third spot on the Dutch Albums chart and was supported by four singles, Shivers, Who is Watching, Serenity and Control Freak.

Breakthrough & Recognition

Armin Van Buuren made his mark outside of Europe in 2008 with the release of his third studio effort, ‘Imagine.’ It marked his first album to chart in the United Sates and landed at the fourth spot on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Moreover, it consisted of a track-list of eleven upbeat songs including, In and Out of Love which featured vocals from the lead singer of Within Temptation, Sharon den Adel. So far, the music video of this track has been viewed more than one hundred and eighty million times on YouTube. The single has also won two International Dance Music Awards for ‘Best Progressive House/Trance Track’ and ‘Best Music Video.’

His next studio album, ‘Mirage’ made Armin Van Buuren a popular star in America. It reached the markets in 2010 and helped him build a loyal fan following. The album turned out to be a critical hit and offered four singles out of which, Not Giving up on Love got the world’s attention and won an IDMA for ‘Best Trance Track.’ In addition, the song was praised by many publications including, Digital Spy, AllMusic and BBC Music.

Album Releases & Notable Work

From 2010 to 2013, Armin Van Buuren focused on playing live shows and went on to perform in many festivals including, Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival. On April 5, 2013, he released the first single from his fifth studio effort, ‘Intense’ titled, This is What It Feels Like which featured Trevor Guthrie. The single recorded double platinum sales in Canada and earned Armin Van Buuren a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Dance Recording.’

A month later, ‘Intense’ was released. The album debuted at the sixty fifth spot on the Billboard 200 and was awarded gold certification in Poland. Plus, it also contained a track with Fiora, Waiting for the Night which appeared in the Dutch film, ‘Verliefd op Ibiza.’

Armin Van Buuren followed it up by delivering his sixth record, ‘Embrace’ in 2015. This studio effort was not like his previous albums as it included influences of progressive house, techno and pop rock. It topped the charts in Netherlands and spawned eight singles out of which, Another You reached the twenty first spot on the Hot Dance/Electronic Dance.

In addition to six studio albums, Armin Van Buuren has put out four compilation records. He has also spawned one extended play, ‘Old Skool’ which came out on August 4, 2016.
