Cole Porter is considered one of the quintessential composers of Broadway’s golden age. His songs not only defined NYC theater for years, but became popular radio hits and enduring classics. Of all the musicals composed by the Broadway legend, one stands out as his true American classic: Anything Goes.
An American Classic
Anything Goes hit Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre in 1934 and has since graced audiences on tour, in film (twice), and as a popular choice for school and community productions. The musical introduced popular American hits, “Anything Goes,” “It’s De-Lovely,” and the most popular, “I Get a Kick Out of You,” to mainstream society.
Cole Porter’s music and lyrics pair with Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse’s book for a wonderful tale set aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London. The plot centers around Billy Crocker, a lovelorn stowaway, with an unfaltering devotion to guest and heiress Hope Harcourt. Despite Hope’s engagement to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, and with the help of nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and Public Enemy #13 Moonface Martin, Billy vies for Hope’s heart.
The original 1934 production starred Ethel Merman as Reno Sweeney, William Gaxton as Billy Crocker, and Bettina Hall as Hope Harcourt. Merman later revised her role, alongside Bing Crosby as Billy Crocker, in the 1936 film version released from Paramount Pictures.
