A New Voice in Town
Andrew Charles Grammer is the birth name of Andy Grammer who was born in 1983 to a successful recording artist, Robert Crane “Red” Grammer. Growing up in Chester, New York, he found his interest in music from a young age and soon learned to play different instruments including, piano, trumpet and guitar. He then started to hone his songwriting skills at age 15. In 2007, Grammer graduated from the California State University with a B.A. in music industry studies.
Determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, Andy Grammer began busking on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica before he was asked to perform in the Viper Room. At the same time, he spawned two extended plays, ‘The World is Yours’ and ‘Soft Lights on Bright Colors’ both of which didn’t get him anywhere. However, in 2009, things changed for Grammer when he was discovered by Aeety, which led to him getting signed with S-Curve Records and a year later, his debut song, Keep Your Head Up came out.
The track became a hit in no time and was used as the theme song for the Australian television drama series, ‘Tricky Business.’ It landed at the fifth spot on the Adult Top 40 and was certified platinum in the United States. In addition, the single charted in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the Netherlands and Belgium and won him MTV’s O Music Award for ‘Most Innovative Video.’
Stepping Under the Limelight
Andy Grammer started to gain more attention in 2011 as he not only went on to open for Plain White T’s but was also declared as ‘Artist to Watch’ by Billboard Magazine. Moreover, he was given the chance to rock the stage at the SXSW 2011. Besides playing live shows, Grammer spawned his debut self-titled studio record on June 14th. The album peaked at the top spot on the Heatseekers Albums chart and was approved by the critics. Following the release of the album, he embarked on his first headlining tour in 2012 and after a year, his fourth extended play, ‘Crazy Beautiful’ hit the stores. The EP contained two new songs, Crazy Beautiful and I Choose You along with the live version of the former track.
In 2014, Grammer dropped his gold selling studio LP, ‘Magazines or Novels.’ It landed at the nineteenth spot on the Billboard 200 and was supported by three singles, Back Home, Good to Be Alive (Hallelujah) and Honey, I’m Good. The latter turned out to be his first song to be awarded triple platinum certification by the RIAA. On top of that, it climbed the ninth spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been covered by names like, Ritchie Remo and Home Free. The album was also praised by many publications including The Huffington Post which stated,
“Magazines or Novels displays a level of consistent creativity and continued talent from Andy Grammer. The challenge of a sophomore album that lives-up to the hype of a debut album is overwhelming, yet Grammer’s second full-length release both meets and surpasses the standard he set back in 2011.”
