Ranked #1 in NHL in ESPN the Magazine’s Ultimate Team Rankings for 2014 (2nd overall among all 122 major pro sports franchises), the Ducks are one of the most dangerous teams in the NHL.
A Brief History
Founded by the Walt Disney Company and named for the Emilio Estevez-starring film franchise, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim came into the league in 1993 alongside the Florida Panthers. Though they’ve since changed ownership and been rebranded the Anaheim Ducks, the franchise of all-time greats like Paul Kariya, Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer has become part of the sports fabric in Southern California. With one Stanley Cup victory in 2007 and a heartbreaking hometown defeat to their rivals, the LA Kings, during the 2014 playoffs, the Ducks are ready to run during the upcoming season.
Built to Compete
Outspoken (and endlessly entertaining) coach Bruce Boudreau has settled in as his Head Coach role, after being hired mid-season in 2011. In May 2014, the team announced a four-year contract extension for general manager Bob Murray, to keep him under contract through the 2019-20 season. In team captain Getzlaf and powerful forward Perry, Boudreau and Murray know they has two of the league’s very best, but if up-and-comers like Silfverberg, Emerson Etem and Kyle Palmieri continue to grow, the sky is the limit for the Ducks this season. On June 27, 2014, The Ducks acquired star center and 2011 Selke Trophy winner Ryan Kessler, rounding out their all-star roster.
