Voted as the “Class Clown” and “Teacher’s Worst Nightmare” in high school, Amy Schumer, the stand-up comedian, has always been a bit of an eccentric. She started off with a humble entry into the industry but was soon making people laughing with her comedic remarks about nearly everything. Her style of comedy is mainly observational comedy with elements of blue comedy, sketch and insult comedy.
After memorable (and very dirty) sets on Comedy Central roasts of Charlie Sheen and Rosanne Barr, the comedienne was given her own sketch-comedy show on the network called, appropriately enough, Inside Amy Schumer. Recently renewed for a third season, the series was just nominated for a Critic’s Choice Award. While fans eagerly await Season 3 of Inside Amy Schumer, they can catch all her potty-mouthed magnificence while she’s traveling the country with her Back Door Tour. Fans of the comedian can catch her live in action by getting their hands on these Amy Schumer tickets.
The Early Life of Amy Schumer
It’s taken almost 10 years for Amy Schumer to become an overnight comic sensation. Born and bred in Long Island, the brassy blonde has been performing stand-up since graduating college and moving to New York City soon thereafter. She taped her first Comedy Central special, Live At Gotham, in 2007 but many credit her appearance on Last Comic Standing later that year as her first real break. (She placed fourth on the series’ fifth season. Womp womp.) From there, Schumer—who was becoming known for her frank and often-hilarious observations on love, sex and relationships—appeared on loads of different TV shows, like 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Hoppus On Music, which she co-hosted on Fuse alongside Blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus.
Beginning her career in the mid-2000s, after graduating from Towson University, Schumer experienced a steady rise to stardom. She started testing her skills as a stand-up comedian, performing at various venues such as the New York City’s Comedy Cellar.
With her work, Amy explores ideas of sex, relationships and the general gender inequality – ideas that few other comedians have dared to venture into. Her inspirations are partly influenced by her family conditions, her father’s illness, financial hardships and Schumer’s parents’ divorce.
Celebrity influences on her work include the likes of Wendy Liebman, Carol Burnett, Joan Rivers and Lucille Ball. Schumer has also listed her co-actress, the legendary Goldie Hawn, as one of her “complete heroes”.
Using her Star Power
Schumer has always been a daring entertainer, someone who is not afraid to leverage her celebrity status to bring important issues to light. For instance, in August 2015, the comedian teamed up with Senator Schumer to demand better gun control laws at Capitol Hill. The issue of gun control has been a close one for Schumer after a mentally ill gunman killed two people and injured nine more at a theater in Lafayette while it was showing her movie, Trainwreck.
Critical Reception to Schumer’s Comedy
With the kind of themes that Schumer explores, she has always managed to keep her act current and updated, according to the recent events. This is one of the reasons why her work is so well received within many circles. In 2015, she was named on the list of the “100 most influential people” by Time magazine. In the same year, she also made it to Barbara Walter’s list of 10 Most Fascinating People in 2015.
Since Schumer typically addresses pressing social issues in her work, she has been appreciated by many and has also received plenty of backlash. In June of 2015, Monica Heisey of The Guardian criticized her for not having a huge blind spot around race. Her response on Twitter, however, set the record straight. She stated, “I go in and out of playing an irreverent idiot. That includes making dumb jokes involving race... You can call it a 'blind spot for racism' or 'lazy,' but you are wrong. It is a joke ... I am not racist.”
At the same time, she has also been praised by the same Monica Heisey when she talks about Schumer saying “everything she touches turns to gold.” She praised the comedian, adding, “smart and sharp, Schumer seems to satirize and encapsulate the feminist debates of the moment, from equal pay to rape culture.”
Schumer also received praise in The New Yorker for her “raucous feminism”.
Amy Schumer’s Best Moments
Over the years, Schumer has had some pretty amazing and well-received moments on stage. Let’s take a look at some of her best comedy moments.
On the Kardashians: In one of her shows, she talked about the role models for today’s young girls – the Kardashians. “We used to have Khloe and Khloe was ours. Whenever there is a group of women you identify with one of them right? Like with Sex and The City, you were like I’m such a Samantha.”
“Khloe has lost half her body weight. Khloe has lost a Kendall.”
On one of her exes: Talking about one of her exes, Schumer gave her fans a good laugh, “he was really into family... He'd never come on the road with me on the weekends 'cause he wanted to spend time with his wife.”
Amy Schumer – Live at the Apollo: This is one of her first shows on HBO that brings some new material to the audience, with the same old Schumer spark.
Awards and Nominations
During her career, Schumer has been nominated for total of 32 awards and has won 10. Her victories include a Peabody Award, a Critics’ Choice Television Award and a Television Critics Association Award for Inside Amy Schumer. She has also won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Sketches Series for Inside Amy Schumer. For her work in the 2015 film, Trainwreck, she got a Critics Choice Movie Award for Best Actress in a Comedy.
