With ratings going through the roof, America’s Got Talent just wrapped up its 12th season in September 2017. The judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Mel B brought a lot of star power to the show as they reviewed some of the most awe-inspiring performances ever to have hit the stage.
America’s Got Talent is a platform for nearly every other kind of talent that has potential to be successful in the entertainment industry. It features singers, magicians, dancers and comedians competing for a grand prize of one million dollars, along with a chance to headline a show on the Las Vegas Strip. And the best part is that the show gives an opportunity to talented amateurs and unknown performers to enter into the entertainment industry.

About America’s Got Talent
The American reality television series airs on the NBC television network as a part of the global Got Talent franchise. The show debuted in 2006 and quickly became a hit in the country. It was created by Simon Cowell, who has also been on the panel of judges since. Other celebrities who have appeared as judges for various seasons of the show include David Hasselhoff, Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne, Brandy Norwood, Howie Mandel, Howard Stern, Mel B and Heidi Klum. Bianca Ryan – Season One Winner
At the age of 11, she amazed the judges with her hypnotic voice during the 2006 auditions. She sailed through the competition and released her first self-titled album in late 2006.
Terry Fator – Season Two Winner
Terry Fator, a singer ventriloquist was announced as the winner of the second season in the finale which was aired on 21st August 2007. The following year, he was signed on to The Mirage hotel and casino in Las Vegas for regular performances.
Neal E. Boyd – Season Three Winner
The pop opera singer from Missouri bagged the $1 million prize as he won America’s Got Talent’s third season. He released his debut album, My American Dream, on 23rd June, 2009.
Kevin Skinner – Season Four Winner
The country music singer from Kentucky wowed the judges with his performance of Garth Brooks’ “If Tomorrow Never Comes” during the auditions. He went on to win the entire competition, performing Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” in the finale.
Michael Grimm – Season Five Winner
The singer/songwriter from Colorado won the fifth season of the show, performing Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” in the finale.
Landau Eugene Murphy – Season Six Winner
Landau, the Frank Sinatra-style singer was announced as the winner of season six on 14th September, 2010, after performing “My Way” in the finale.
Olate Dogs – Season Seven Winner
Olate Dogs, a dog trick act with a father and son as trainers bagged the $1 million prize as the winners of season seven of the show. Richard and Nicholas Olate are the people who brought you this act.
Kenichi Ebina – Season Eight Winner
The performance artist of Japanese origin was the first dance act to win the competition. Her act combines unique self-taught acting, storytelling with a variety of different dances styles.
Mat Franco - Season Nine Winner
Mat Franco, the magician from Rhode Island won the ninth season of the talent competition. He was the first magician to win the $1 million prize and is currently headlining at The LINQ Hotel and Casino at the Mat Franco Theater in Las Vegas.
Paul Zerdin – Season Ten Winner
The British ventriloquist and comedian from London won the 10th season of the show and has since appeared on multiple television shows.
Grace VanderWaal – Season Eleven Winner
Her distinctive vocals and the accompanying ukulele set her apart from other contestants, eventually leading her to the big win in season eleven of the show. Soon after the show, VanderWaal released her first EP, called “Perfectly Imperfect”, which went on to become the highest selling EP of 2016.
Darci Lynne Farmer – Season Twelve Winner
The 13-year old ventriloquist from Oklahoma won the competition in 2017. She got a standing ovation from the judges Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Simon Cowell for her performance of Smokey Robinson’s “Who’s Lovin’ You”. After receiving her $1 million prize, she headlined a sold out gig at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, which had two shows added to it after the initial dates completely sold out.
Reception of America’s Got Talent
Since the starting of the show, the ratings for it have been quite high, ranging from somewhere between 9 million viewers to almost 16 million viewers, with an average viewership of around 11 million. The talent show also ranked well in the 18 – 49 demographics, with ratings fluctuating between 1.6 and 4.6. Audition episodes and the performance episodes typically rank higher than the results show.
The highest rated season in terms of overall viewership was season four, in 2009. The most watched episode so far was the season five finale in 2010 with an impressive 16.41 million people tuning in to watch the show.
Awards and Nominations for the Show
The phenomenal success of the show has helped it win many prestigious awards and be nominated for countless others. America’s Got Talent was nominated for the People’s Choice Awards in the category of Favorite TV Competition Show in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The show was also nominated for the Kids’ Choice Awards in the category of Favorite Reality Show in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and in 2017. It was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Hairstyling For a Multi-Camera Series of Special.
America’s Got Talent won the People’s Choice Award for the Favorite TV Competition in 2016 and the Kids’ Choice Award for the Favorite Reality Show in 2017. The decision for the Critics’ Choice Award for the Best Reality Series – Competition is still pending and will be revealed at the 2018 ceremony.
