Early Music of Alter Bridge

After the breakup of Creed, due to tensions with the lead singer, Scott Stapp, Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips planned on creating their own band. They invited the lead singer, Myles Kennedy from The Mayfield Tour to join them as the lead vocalist. After naming the newly formed group Alter Bridge (after a nearby bridge in Tremonti’s home town Detroit), the band began working on their debut album.

As Creed announced its breakup, Alter Bridge released their lead single, “Open Your Eyes”, from the new album. The debut album, One Day Remains, was released in August 2004 and generated a mixed response from the fans and critics. The album peaked at No. 5 on Billboard charts and achieved gold status. The songs “Find the Real” and “Broken Wings” managed to create some interest in the album. Even though the success of the debut album was far from the multi-platinum success that Creed had previously enjoyed, Alter Bridge was still on the right track for future fame.

Breakthrough with Blackbird

After switching labels, the band began working on their new album with Universal Republic Records. The album, Blackbird, was released on 9th October, 2007 and featured multiple successful singles such as “Watch Over You” and “Rise Today”. The album was a big success for the band, as it received highly positive reviews from fans and critics alike. It currently holds a 9.4 out of 10 rating on Ultimate Guitar Archive. The title track of the album reached No. 1 on the list of the greatest guitar solos of all time in 2011.

Following the success of this album, the band embarked on a world tour. The tour managed to generate an increased amount of interest in the work of the band and wrapped up successfully.

More Music and Success

After taking some time out for other projects, Alter Bridge began working on their new album in 2009, all through May 2010. After signing with Roadrunner Records in 2010, the band embarked on a spring tour in 2011. The title of their third album was released, AB III, along with a list of tracks on their official website. The first single from the album, “Isolation”, ended up becoming Alter Bridge’s most successful track, reaching No. 1 on active rock radio and the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. In the US, the album opened at No. 17 on the Billboard 200.

AB III turned out be an overwhelming critical success with MusicRadar calling it “one of the greatest albums of the year”. The band soon started touring to promote this album in the fall of 2010, performing at multiple European festivals such as Nova Rock Festival, Hellfest Summer Open Air and the Download Festival.

After spending some more time working on their side projects, the band members met again in December 2012 to discuss the future of the band and new music. In January 2013, they began recording more material. The name of the album was confirmed as Fortress with the first single “Addicted to Pain” being released on 12th August, 2013.

The album was released in the US on 8th October and met with immediate success. Allmusic praised the album, saying that it “is a driving album that not only doesn't feel tired or stale, but is a monster of an album that makes a pretty solid case for being some of Alter Bridge's strongest and most dynamic work to date.”

Singles “Cry of Achilles” and “Water Rising” performed well on the charts.

The Last Hero

The band’s most recent album was released on 7th October, 2016 and was called The Last Hero. Soon after the release of this album, Alter Bridge embarked on an international tour that saw them play shows in New Zealand and Australia, along with multiple festivals across Europe.

Musical Style of Alter Bridge

The music of Alter Bridge is often referred to as “heavy, yet melodic”. The main genres their music falls under include hard rock, alternative metal, heavy metal, post-grunge and progressive metal. The lyrical content of their songs is mostly written by Kennedy and Tremonti. The band explored themes of ideas of hope, overcoming sadness, regret, loneliness, pain and addiction in their first two albums. The third album, AB III, sees a noted change in the subject matter of the group’s lyrical content. The songs become noticeably darker with most songs dealing with ideas of faith and a loss of innocence.

Awards and Achievements

Over the years, the young band has managed to bag several honors for their contribution to the music industry. Their first album achieved a gold status and all of their subsequent albums have received a lot of critical acclaim. The band’s live album and concert film, Live from Amsterdam, released in 2009 managed to rise an impressive 15,000 spots on the “Bestsellers in Music Videos & Concerts” chart on Amazon in just eight hours. This rise saw the album cross big artists such as Michael Jackson and Bon Jovi to reach the top spot, where it remained for a number of weeks.
