The Starting Point
The first seeds for the formation of Alt-J were planted when Thom Sonny, Gus Unger-Hamilton, Joe Newman ad Gwil Sainsbury met at the Leeds University in the year 2007. They shared a passion for music and decided to form Alt-J. Once they had graduated, they decided to re-locate to Cambridge. They were in no hurry to sign a recording deal and went about honing their skills. The band members spent close to two years doing just that. Then right at the end of 2011, in December of that year, they signed a recording contract with Infectious Music.
The Musical Journey Begins
They came out with a demo EP titled “?” and it spawned four songs. They released a few tracks after that and then came out with their first studio album titled “An Awesome Wave” on May 25, 2012. The record received a lot of acclaim from the critics. AllMusic gave it three and a half stars out of five while it also received four stars each from The Irish Times, The New Zealand Herald and Q Magazine. Rolling Stone gave it three stars out of five.
The album did well on the charts too. It peaked at the first spot on the UK Indie Albums chart and the Irish Independent Albums chart. It also went as high as the eighteenth position on the US Alternative Albums chart and also charted in Switzerland, Scotland, Denmark and the Netherlands among other countries. The album was certified gold in Australia, Canada and the US while it went platinum in the UK. It also won an Ivor Novello Award for the “Album of the Year.”
The Next Two Albums
The band encountered a setback when Gwil Sainsbury quit in January of 2014. However, they released their second studio album titled “This Is All Yours” on September 22, 2014. The album was another critical hit that received four stars out of five from AllMusic, The Daily Telegraph, Mojo, Q Magazine, The Guardian and Rolling Stone.
On the commercial front, This Is All Yours went straight to the top spot on the UK Albums Chart on debut and debuted at the second position in Canada. The album also peaked at the first spot on the US Top Rock Albums chart and the US Top Alternative Albums chart. It also went as high as the fourth position on the US Billboard 200.
This Is All Yours also charted in Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and Hungary among other countries. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award. It was certified gold in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. Alt-J then went on a North American tour in October and November that saw them perform for twenty three days.
Their third album was titled “Relaxer” and it was released on June 2, 2017. Just like the previous two records, Relaxer turned out to be another critical success. It got three and a half stars out of five from AllMusic and three stars from The Guardian and Rolling Stone each. The Daily Telegraph, NME and Q deemed it good enough to merit four stars out of five.
Relaxer also peaked at the fourteenth spot on the US Billboard 200 and at the sixth position on the UK Albums charts. It also charted in Spain, Scotland, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Australia among other countries. The record also made it to NME’s list of the “Albums of the Year 2017” and to Q’s list of the “50 Best Albums of 2017.”
