Based on the Academy Award-winning animated Disney film, Aladdin tells the story of a street-smart commoner whose entire life changes when he falls in love with a princess and discovers a magic lamp. Nominated for 5 Tony Awards, Aladdin features gorgeous set and costume designs, show-stopping production numbers and an awe-inspiring carpet ride.

The play premiered in Seattle at the 5th Avenue Theatre in 2011. It opened to a tremendous response which led a number of regional and international productions to make various adaptations of the endearing Middle Eastern folk tale.

The Broadway premiere of Aladdin was held at the New Amsterdam Theatre on March 20, 2014. About the Show

Let us tell you a bit about some important aspects and highlights of the Broadway production you’re so excited to catch live.

Cast- If you don’t know yet, American actor Telly Leung is Broadway’s new Aladdin since June, 2017. Leung was seen in the Broadway musical ‘In Transit’ earlier this year. He has replaced the original cast member Adam Jacobs who left the Disney musical to star in the North American tour of the play.

Leung is credited to have originated the role of Boq in the Chicago production of the musical Wicked.

American actor Courtney Rhodes Reed continues to play Princess Jasmine in the musical while the characters of Genie and Jafar are brought to life on stage by actors Major Attaway and Jonathan Freeman respectively.

Music-Aladdin the musical comprises a mix of songs; some that were specifically written for the play and some which were taken from the 1992 movie and later restored for the musical.

For example ‘Proud of Your Boy’ is one song that was cut from the movie when the part about Aladdin’s mother was taken out. Fortunately, the track received the much deserved attention and appreciation following its presentation in the Disney theatrical production of Aladdin.

Other popular songs in the musical are ‘Overture,’ ‘One Jump Ahead’ and ‘Arabian Nights.’ The music score for all songs is by Alan Menken; however the lyricists for different numbers vary.

Producer- The show is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions (DTP), a division of Disney Theatrical Group which operates under Thomas Schumacher. Founded in 1993, it is one of the most successful commercial theatre enterprises in the world.

Under the Disney Theatrical Productions banner, the group has produced and licensed several Broadway productions, starting from Beauty and the Beast back in 1994 to Aladdin in 2014.

The shows brought together by this group have enjoyed an audience of over nineteen million in more than fifty different countries.

Reviews, Awards & Accolades

Since Aladdin premiered on Broadway, its popularity among fans and critics is on the rise.

The Broadway production has received rave reviews from several renowned publications. These include The New York Times, The Hollywood Reporter, The Chicago Tribune and others.

The Associated Press stated “It's spritely ... well sung ... and hits that sweet spot Disney Theatrical Productions do so well, a saccharine fairy tale for the kids cut by some sly, vinegary quips for their parents.”

Entertainment Weekly wrote “Overall, this is one of the better Disney stage musicals, complete with several eye-popping production numbers that benefit from Nicholaw's spirited choreography, Bob Crowley's elaborate and chameleonic sets, and Gregg Barnes' glittery costumes.”

During the 2014 award season, the original Broadway production of Aladdin received Five Tony Award nominations in categories including Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical, Best musical, Best Choreography, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. Out of these, James Monroe Iglehart won the award for the Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.
