Early Life and Career
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Akon spent most of his childhood in Senegal in West Africa. Born into a musical family – with a percussionist father and a dancer mother, Akon got involved into music making from an early age. At a young age, he managed to learn to play multiple instruments, including the djembe, guitar and drums.
It wasn’t long after this that Akon began to develop a noted interest in music. The window of opportunity opened for him when the music mogul, Devyne Stephens of Upfront Megatainment first noticed him. The relationship between Akon and Stephens began as a mentorship and friendship and eventually Stephens signed him on to his production company. The songs Akon recorded here became his foundation for the future years. They were brought to the attention of SRC Records, which took note of the track “Lonely”. SRC A&R Jerome Foster, along with CEO Steve Rifkind was so impressed with Akon’s music that they decided to fly to meet the young artist.
Akon released his debut album, Trouble, in June 2004. The album had hit singles such as “Locked Up”, “Belly Dancer (Bananza)”, “Pot of Gold” and “Lonely”. “Locked Up” peaked at number 8 in the US and 5th in the UK. In 2005, Akon released the single “Lonely” with Bobby Vinton’s famous tune of “Mr. Lonely”. This song reached the top five on Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts in the UK, Germany and Australia. The album also reached No. 1 in the UK by April 2005.
Further Success and Konvicted
After the release of his first album, Akon got involved in the music production side as well. Under Interscope Records, he started his own record label, KonLive Distribution. Soon after the formation of this label, the Senegalese singer released his second album, Konvicted. The album debuted at No.2 on the Billboard 200 and managed to sell well over 250,000 copies within the first week of its release. Konvicted sold more than one million records in the US alone in mere six weeks and was certified platinum in seven weeks. The album stayed in the top twenty of the Billboard 200 for 28 weeks straight and peaked at number two on four separate occasions. By November, 2007, the album was certified triple platinum with more than three million units in sales in the US.
The album was the first major highlight of Akon’s rising career, which featured mega stars Snoop Dogg, Styles P. and Eminem. The first single from this album, “Smack That”, featuring Eminem peaked at number two for more than five consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. The record has since broken many records including the largest climb on the Hot 100, going from number 95 to number 7. It was nominated at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards for the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration but lost out to Justin Timberlake and T.I.’s “My Love”.
More success followed as Akon released his second single from the album, titled “I Wanna Love You”, featuring Snoop Dogg. This song became his first number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and it remained on the top for two consecutive weeks. In January 2007, Akon released the single “Don’t Matter”, which ended up becoming his first solo effort to hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. “Sorry, Blame It On Me” was another single from this album that charted, reaching number seven on the Hot 100.
Akon also produced Gwen Stefani’s “The Sweet Escape” and featured on it as well. The song reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
Freedom and Stadium
Akon’s third album, Freedom, was released in December 2008 and was soon certified platinum in the US. The singles “Right Now (Na Na Na), “Beautiful”, “I’m So Paid” and “We Don’t Care” from this album performed well on the charts and added more fame to Akon’s superstar status. The singer collaborated with David Guetta on the track “Sexy Bitch”, which reached number one in more than six countries.
Akon announced the release of his latest album to date, Stadium, in November 2016. However, the album was indefinitely postponed and has yet to be released.
