Adam Sandler is a well known American comedian, actor, producer, musician and screenwriter. His career includes stints on the iconic TV show Saturday Night Live and popular movies such as I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Bedtime Stories, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, and Just Go With It. He has also produced and starred in Netflix films including The Do-Over, The Ridiculous 6 and Sandy Wexler.

Early Years

Adam Richard Sandler was born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 9, 1966. His father Stanley Sandler was an electrical engineer while his mother Judy was a school teacher. He is youngest among four siblings. During his days at Manchester Central High School, Sandler earned the reputation of a class clown. His brother noticed his talent and encouraged him to perform at a comedy club in Boston. After high school, Sandler enrolled into the Lee Strasberg Theater Film Institute in New York City. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in acting from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in 1988.

Adam Sandler began his career during the late 1980s. One of his first appearances on television was on The Cosby Show in which he played a friend of the Huxtable family. He became a regular on Remote Control, a TV game show which was MTV’s first original non-musical program. Meanwhile Sandler was also doing stand-up comedy and it was during one of his live gigs that he was noticed by comedian Dennis Miller who then referred him to the team of Saturday Night Live. During his tenure on SNL, Sandler created popular characters such as Canteen Boy, Opera Man and Cajun Man.

Although Adam Sandler began appearing in movies in the late 80s, it was during the 90s that he carved his niche in the cinema. In 1993, Sandler shared the screen with David Spade and Chris Fraley in the movie Coneheads. He also co-starred in the movie Airheads alongside Steve Buscemi and Brendan Fraser.

His 2005 movie The Longest Yard had him play a convict and former football superstar who organizes a football game between the guards and the inmates. It was a remake of the 1974 movie in which the lead character was enacted by Burt Reynolds. Reynolds also made an appearance in the 2005 version along with singer Nelly and comedian Chris Rock.

The following year Sandler acted in the movie Click where his role was that of an architect who finds a remote-control that gives him the power to rewind or fast-forward his life. In 2007 the actor was seen in the Reign Over Me movie, playing a man who lost his family in the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and is now rebuilding his shattered life. His performance earned him several praises with Variety describing it as ‘excellent’ and ‘compelling.’

Sandler further cemented his place in the industry by founding his company Happy Madison Productions in the year 1999. He has since produced numerous movies under the banner, the first of which was Rob Schneider’s Deuce Bigalow.

In 2011, Sandler starred in the romantic comedy Just Go With It alongside actors Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Aniston, Brooklyn Decker and Nick Swardson. It received an overwhelming response from the fans, grossing more than $214 million.

The comedian’s 2010 comedy Grown Ups opposite Salma Hayek was a huge box office hit. Besides acting, Sandler also wrote the script for the movie. In 2012, he lent his voice in the animated movie Hotel Transylvania. He continued his voice work in Hotel Transylvania 2 and Pixels, both of which came out in 2015.

Sandler’s performance in the 2014 comedy Blended was also received very well by the fans. He played the role of Jim Friedman, a widower with three daughters who falls in love with a divorcee mother of two sons. Although it wasn’t highly reviewed by the critics, Blended was a smash hit on the box office.

He was honored with Male Star of the Year Award at the CinemaCon Awards in 2014. For four consecutive years (2012-2015), Sandler won the People’s Choice Award for the Favorite Comedic Movie Actor.
