Early Years

Stuart Leslie Goddard was born in Marylebone, London, on November, 3, 1954. He was the only child of his parents Betty Kathleen Smith and Leslie Goddard. His father worked as a chauffeur while his mother was an embroiderer. They divorced when Goddard was only seven years old.

Goddard first attended the Robinsfield Infants School where he got into trouble for throwing a brick through the office of the head teacher. The incident led him to be placed under the supervision of teacher Joanna Saloman. The singer credits her for helping him develop his creative abilities.

Goddard then went to the Barrow Hill Junior School where he was engaged in boxing and cricket. After passing the eleven plus exam, he secured a place at the St Marylebone Grammar School. Following A Levels, Goddard enrolled into the Hornsey College of Art to study graphic designing.

The first band Goddard played as part of was Bazooka Joe. He served as the bass guitarist for the group. He married his Hornsey fellow student, Carol Mills and the couple lived at her parents’ house in Muswell Hill. Goddard took an overdose of pills which he found in his mother-in-law’s kitchen cabinet and was rushed to the hospital where he had his stomach pumped. He was then admitted in Colney Hatch mental hospital and eventually discharged after three months. This had a very bad affect on his marriage and studies. The couple divorced and Goddard also quit college. After rehabilitation, he changed his name to Adam Ant and decided to focus on his music career.

With dreams and determination to make it in the music industry, Ant got in touch with his former band mates Andy Warren and Lester Square to form a music band. The musicians got together with drummer Paul Flanagan and The Ants came into being. Shorty after, the musicians renamed themselves as Adam and the Ants.

Initially the band was not able to gain much popularity but after some changes in the lineup and the inclusion of a new guitarist Marco Pirroni, Adam and the Ants rose to the top of the music charts first in the UK and later in the US. Their albums, Kings of the Wild Frontier and Prince Charming together sold over fifteen million copies and produced sixteen hit songs.

Sometime later Adam Ant noticed a lack in enthusiasm on the part of the band members and decided to launch his solo career. However, he took his songwriting partner and guitarist Marco Pirroni along with him. In October of 1982, Adam Ant released his debut solo record Friend or Foe via Columbia Records. The album reached the fifth spot on the UK charts, becoming the singer’s highest charting solo music album. Among the hit songs on the collection are Hello, I Love You, Desperate But Not Serious and Goody Two Shoes.

For the purpose of touring, Adam Ant recruited a number of band members including drummers Barry Watts and Bogdan Wiczling, bassist Chris Constantinou and guitarist Cha Burns and a few others. The band gave its debut live performance on October, 1, 1982, at the Astoria Theatre in London following which they kicked off a tour of the US in November of the same year. During a live show in Cleveland, Ant suffered a knee injury which forced him to postpone his tour dates. During the time he was recovering from the injury, he worked with Pirroni on new music material. This formed the basis of his second solo record titled Strip. It was released in 1983 and its title track reached the 41st spot on the UK Singles chart while 42nd on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was re-released in 2005 with eight bonus songs.

Adam Ant’s following albums namely Manners and Physique and Wonderful failed to make much of an impact. Towards the end of the decade, the audience saw the singer appear as a supporting cast in a number of movies. In 1989, Ant played his first lead role in the movie Trust Me.

Adam Ant stayed away from the limelight for some years focusing on his personal life. In 2010, he disclosed his plans to make a comeback. In 2013, the musician finally made a comeback with the album Adam Ant Is The Blueblack Hussar in Marrying The Gunner’s Daughter. This was his first release since Wonderful in 1995. A documentary film about his comeback was also released the same year.
