Early Life and Influences

AC/DC is one of the most influential hard rock bands in the world. They have impressed everyone with their music including Steven Tyler, who described the group’s power chords as,

“The thunder from down under that gives you the second most powerful surge that can flow through your body.”

The quartet is inspired by the likes of Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Who, The Knicks and Alice Cooper.

Brothers Angus and Malcolm Young decided to form a group in 1973. They called it AC/DC which is an abbreviation of Alternate Current/Direct Current. The duo completed the band’s lineup by hiring Dave Evans, Colin Burgess and Larry Van Kriedt. Managed by Dennis Laughlin, the group started to perform together in different clubs in Sydney, Australia.  Soon, Laughlin quit and that led to the arrival of Michael Browning as the new manager of the group. The band continued to perform shows around Australia which helped them find fame in the country.

In September of 1974, Ronald Belford ‘Bon’ Scott joined AC/DC by replacing the vocalist, Dave Evans. Soon afterwards, they started to work on their first Australia-only studio project and on February 17, 1975, they put out, ‘High Voltage.’ It was certified five times platinum by the ARIA. In the same year, AC/DC churned out their album, ‘T.N.T’ which marked the second record to be exclusively released in Australia. This LP turned the group into national superstars as it not only went nine times platinum in the country but also peaked at the second spot on the ARIA chart.

Breakthrough & Recognition

After receiving such a tremendous response in Australia, AC/DC decided to release their debut record, ‘High Voltage’ internationally in 1976. Released by Atlantic Records, this album enjoyed great commercial success in the United States as it was certified triple platinum by the RIAA. It also became a huge hit in Europe and achieved gold level sales in three countries, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. The international version of ‘High Voltage’ also contained some new songs including, Live Wire which was used by the former three-time UFC Heavyweight Champion, Randy Couture as his entrance song at UFC 102.

Before the year could come to an end, AC/DC released another hit record, ‘Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.’ This album captured the true essence of hard rock music and displayed the band’s phenomenal songwriting skills. It charted at the third spot on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell in excess of six million copies in both the United States and Australia.

AC/DC then followed it up by releasing two more studio efforts, ‘Let There Be Rock’ and ‘Powerage,’ before they dropped one of their most popular records, ‘Highway to Hell’ in 1979. The studio LP was loaded with hit songs that have now become staples of rock music including, Girls Got Rhythm, Touch Too Much, Walk All Over You and Night Prowler. It also featured a single, Highway to Hell which has been covered by many popular artists including Marilyn Manson, Sam Kinison and Bruce Springsteen. Moreover, it made it to Rolling Stone’s list of the ‘500 Greatest Songs of All Time’ and won two APRA Awards. It also became a huge critical hit and was praised by The Rolling Stones.

Since the release of ‘Highway to Hell,’ AC/DC have gone on to reach new heights in the music industry. They have sold more than two hundred million albums globally and have their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Moreover, they were mentioned in Rolling Stone’s list of the ‘100 Greatest Artists of All Time’ and were also named ‘The Greatest Rock and Roll Band of All Time’ by the same publication.
