Absinthe’s History

Absinthe is not a very old show, it premiered in 2006. Following a successful run in Manhattan it became a resident show in Las Vegas in April 2011. When it started playing at the Caesars Palace it was a temporary arrangement set for the producers of Absinthe at the Roman Plaza. They were given the space for the temporary tent because the Fontainebleau Resort Las Vegas, which was originally supposed to host the production closed, so Caesars Palace provided the space for these spectacular performances to take place.

Though the show attracted a lot of interest, it could not continue for long here. The reason for it was that it couldn’t meet the fire and rescue code standards and so after 90 days of back to back performances it had to wind up its shows. The shows however had piqued the interest of Gary Selesner, the president of Caesars Palace. He decided that the show must go on. Selesner imported a Spiegel tent from Germany. This one met the fire & rescue code standards and thus the show now owned by Spiegelworld went on like before at the same site. The show has already given more than 15,000  performances and is getting better with each year with more innovative and daring acts added to it to keep it fresh and engaging.

The Gazillionaire hosts the show which is played by Voki Kalfayan who worked with Cirque Du Soleil before as a clown. And he is assisted by Anais Thomassian performing as Penny Pibbets. Together the cast and crew put up great performances that attract packed crowds to the venue.

Gazillionaire hosts the show and his amusing commentary throughout is hilarious. His character is a big hit with audiences who enjoy his wacky style and absurd personality just as much.  Gazillionaire not only interacts with the attendees but keeps them laughing with his unabashed jokes and does not hesitate to poke jokes at them. His character can be said to be the life of the show.  Another interesting character is his quirky and raucous assistant Penny who adds to the fun with her own crass comments and constant commentary. Together the two give the show an eccentric twist to present one wild act after the other.

The show has often been compared to Cirque du Soleil but it is more of a parody of Cirque du Soleil and focuses on making fun of the entertainment business. All acts are diverse and entertaining which makes it one of the funniest and craziest shows on the Strip. You can expect a rope walking act, arm balancing galore, aerialist acts and acts of intense insanity. These range from seductive to daring death defying-stunts and playful acts – it is a variety show in its true essence.

Response and Reviews

According to the Huffington Post, “If you see one show in your entire life, make it Absinthe!”

When the show started no one would have thought that it would go on to be a big success. It was rejected outright by many who criticized Absinthe as a vulgar show that didn’t stand a chance. But history proved them wrong.

The show defied all odds and turned out to click with the masses who love the outlandish jokes, old world burlesque, the sizzling acts and not to mention the daring feats that take place in a theatre-in-the-round presentation. It was a combination of these acts that appealed to the Las Vegas crowd and turned out to be number one show with matchless performances. It has been hailed as “The number one greatest show in Las Vegas history,” by Las Vegas Weekly.

The New York Times describes it in the following words, “Imagine Cirque du Soleil as channeled through "Rocky Horror Picture Show" and painted by George Grosz. A blend of skill, erotic innuendo and zaniness. The memorable moments make a jaded audience literally gasp."
