Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance first premiered in 1966 to rave reviews. It won the Pulizer Prize in 1967, and was adapted into film in 1973. In 1996, it won a Tony for Best Revival of a Play, and was reworked and restaged with Albee's input in 2013. Several revivals and rewrites later, A Delicate Balance has landed back on Broadway, as relevant as ever.
When a married couple, Agnes and Tobias, turn unexpectedly into hosts for their newly divorced adult daughter, their long-time friends who are visiting for the weekend, and Agnes’ alcoholic sister, it quickly becomes a recipe for tense human emotion and really great theater. With characters struggling between responsibility and free-will, this drama touches on the issues of dysfunction, loss of reality, alcoholism, suburban complacency, and loyalty. With a superstar cast, including powerhouse stage veterans Glenn Close (Agnes) and John Lithgow (Tobias), there is no question that Albee’s intensity will shine through.
With a very short run (only 18 weeks on the books) scheduled throughout the holiday season and a very loud buzz already building, it is clear that A Delicate Balance will be a very desirable destination for Broadway fans.
