About The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones are a British rock band that formed in London, England in 1962. Over the years, the group has become one of the most successful rock bands of all time selling more than 200 million albums worldwide. The original group consisted of six members including Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and Ian Stewart. Since then, the band has gone through many reincarnations and now consists of 4 members; Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and Ronnie Wood.

Early Years

Back in 1950, a young Keith Richards became friends with classmate Mick Jagger in Dartford, Kent. Shortly after, Jagger’s family moved away, and the two boys lost touch. Fast forward to 1961, when Jagger runs into his childhood friend, Keith Richards, at a train station and they discover a mutual love for the blues. At that point, Keith and Mick started playing music together along with 3 other members. The group called themselves the “Blues Boys”.

In 1962, Jagger and Richards sent a tape to Alexis Korner who had a rhythm and blues band called Blues Incorporated. Korner was impressed by the tape and decided to join forces with Jagger and Richards. In June of 1962, a journalist asked for the new band’s name and a Muddy Waters LP was laying on the floor nearby. The album had a track on it called “Rollin’ Stone” which inspired the infamous name, The Rolling Stones.

Albums

In 1963, The Rolling Stones signed a recording contract with Decca Records. That year, the band recorded their debut album, The Rolling Stones. The album primarily consisted of covers and had only one original song that was written by Jagger and Richards. The band decided they needed more original songs to stay relevant and started developing their songwriting skills.

The bands sophomore album, The Rolling Stones No. 2 was released in 1965 and quickly hit number one on the British charts. In the US, the album made it up to No. 5 on the charts. In 1965 the group recorded their first real international hit “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfation” which solidified the bands success worldwide. Overall, the group has released 30 studio albums, 26 live albums, and 25 compilation albums.
