About Spice Girls
The Spice Girls are an all-female pop group that formed in London, England in 1994. Their debut single “Wannabe” was released in 1996 and hit number one in 37 countries which brought instant global recognition. The groups debut album Spice is still the best-selling album by a female group of all time with over 31 million copies sold around the world. The Spice Girls are also the best-selling female group of all time having sold at total of over 85 million records worldwide.
Back in the mid-1990’s a surge of boy bands hit the pop music scene and Heart Management, a family management team, wanted to create an all-female group that could compete with the likes of popular boy bands, Take That and East 17. With a plan in mind, Bob and Chris Herbet of Heart Management ran an advertisement looking for singers to audition for the all-girl group at Danceworks Studios. At the end of auditions, Victoria Adams, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell and Michelle Stephenson had been selected to form the group initially named “Touch”.
Shortly after forming, the girls moved into a house in England and began working on demos. Only a few months in, Michele Stephenson was fired and replaced by Emma Bunton who would go on to be known as “Baby Spice”. The group later left the management team that brought them together and began interviewing record labels without a manager. Eventually the girls signed a deal with Virgin Records and changed their name to Spice Girls.
Spice: In September of 1996, the Spice Girls released their debut album Spice and it quickly became a worldwide success. The album reached number one in over 17 countries and was certified Multi-Platinum in 27 countries. In total over 23 million copies of Spice have been sold worldwide making it the best-selling album by an all-girl group in history.
Spiceworld: The Spice Girls sophomore album Spiceworld also gained massive worldwide attention. The album was released in November of 1997 and reached number one in 13 countries. In total Spiceworld has sold over 13 million copies worldwide and is also one of the best selling albums by an all-girl group of all time.
Forever: The final album by the Spice Girls, Forever, was released in November of 2000. The album did not include Geri Halliwell, who later rejoined the group. Forever struggled to match the success of previous albums and really only saw commercial success in the UK. In total the Forever only sold 4 million copies worldwide.
