Early Years
Eilleen Regina Edwards was born on August 28, 1965, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. She later changed her name to Shania Twain. She had a troubled childhood, watching her mother suffer at the hands of her step father and the family struggling to make ends meet. But music is what Twain found solace in. She learned to play the guitar when she was just eight years old; at ten she was writing her own songs and by thirteen she had also started singing. Her mother noticed her talent and although the family’s financial situation was not sound, she managed to get Twain music lessons. Encouraged by her mother, the young singer began performing gigs at local clubs and community events. Soon she garnered a considerable fan following in the local music circuit.
In 1983, Shania Twain joined a band called Flirt and toured across Ontario with it. In 1987 she had the chance of meeting Mary Bailey at the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, where Twain was a performer and Bailey the organizer. The same year tragedy struck Twain’s life when her parents got killed in a car accident, leaving the then 21-year old singer to look after her siblings.
Twain took up a job as a singer at a nearby resort in Huntsville. However, she had not given up making her own music and continued to write songs in her free time.
The Beginning
When Shania Twain’s siblings had grown up and moved their separate ways, Twain decided to focus on her music career full-time. She recorded a demo tape and sent it to various record executives. Mercy Nashville Records (known as PolyGram Records at the time) recognized her potential and signed a deal with her.
She had signed on as Eilleen Twain, which the record label didn’t find suitable. Since Twain wanted to keep her surname to honor her stepfather, she decided to change Eilleen to Shania. It is an Ojibwe word meaning ‘I’m on my way.’
The singer’s debut self-titled album came out in 1993. Although it wasn’t a major hit, it generally received positive reviews from the critics. Besides the video of the song What Made You Say That featuring Twain in a crop top earned a lot of attention. It was at this point in time that producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange noticed the singer. He had produced records for well-known music groups such as Def Leppard and AC/DC. He got in touch with Twain and decided to work with her on her next record.
Contributions
For her first album, Twain was encouraged to sing songs written by others. Hence she felt a lack of artistic freedom. This however changed in her second studio album The Woman in Me where Twain and Lange co-wrote ten of the total twelve tracks. The music had elements of rock, pop and country and although Twain loved how the album turned out, she was anxious about the response of the audience. Released in February of 1995, The Woman in Me was a massive success. It topped the US Billboard Top Country Albums chart. By the end of the year, it had sold around four million copies. In 2000, the record went on to receive 12x Platinum certification by the RIAA.
Twain followed up the success of The Woman in Me with Come On Over in 1997. The record, another co-production with Robert Lange, was a blockbuster. Further blending the pop and country genres, the album spawned pumped-up songs such as That Don’t Impress Me Much and Man! I Feel Like a Woman! Besides it also comprised romantic ballads such as From This Moment On and You’re Still the One.
In 2002, Shania Twain treated her fans with her fourth studio album Up! There were three versions of this record – a red disc which was the pop version, a green disc (a country version) and a blue disc, an international version inspired by Bollywood music. Up! received Diamond certification and the singer toured across Europe and North America to promote the album.
By 2004 Twain had recorded enough material to release a compilation album. Titled Greatest Hits, the record consists a total of seventeen hits from her previous albums and three new songs.
Shania Twain had been away from the limelight for some years. Having sorted her personal problems, the singer made a comeback with her fifth studio album Now in 2017. This was the singer’s first album release in fifteen years. The record topped the music charts in countries including Canada, Australia, UK and the US.
