Starting Her Journey
Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor was born on November 7, 1996, in Takapuna, Auckland. Before she found her interest in music, she was honing her public speaking skills at the age of five and became a part of a drama group. She also used to play netball with her friend, Eliza McCartney who later became a professional athlete and won the bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in 2016.
In 2009, Lorde decided to team up with her friend, Louis McDonald and competed in the Belmont Intermediate School annual talent show which they won. In the same year, the pair was invited on Jim Mora’s radio show, ‘Afternoons’ where they performed their takes on Kings of Leon’s Grammy winning song, Use Somebody and Pixie Lott’s hit single, Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh). By 2010, Lorde and McDonald had formed a group, ‘Ella & Louis’ and they began to play shows regularly. During this time, she was signed to UMG for development and was given vocal training by Frances Dickinson. Soon, Lorde started to write her own songs and later, she partnered with the former lead singer of Goodnight Nurse, Joel Little and the two recorded a five-song EP.
In the fall of 2012, Lorde began to work on her first extended play, ‘The Love Club EP’ which she uploaded on SoundCloud for free download. It generated a great response which led to the UMG releasing this EP commercially on March 8, 2013. The extended play brought her mainstream success and was certified seven times platinum in Australia. It peaked at the twenty third spot on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for the World Music Award under the category of ‘Best Album.’ It also received 3/5 stars from AllMusic.
