Early Life and Influences

Keith Urban grew up listening to rock music and it never left him. He was a massive fan of AC/DC, Bryan Adams and John Mellencamp. In an interview with Taste of Country, when it was put to him that his track Long Hot Summer takes one back to 80’s rock music from the likes of Adams and Mellencamp, this is what Urban had to say:

“It’s so awesome that you said that. "I never thought that much about John, but [Mellencamp] is a huge influence on me. I’m thinking of a song like ‘Paper in Fire,’ or even ‘Summer of ’69,’ and you’re right, it’s a heartland rocker in that vein. It’s probably my AC/DC upbringing. I’ve always loved 4/4 tunes that are four-on-the-floor and just really want to rock.”

Listening to these rock music superstars shaped his musical direction to a large extent.

Keith Urban was born in New Zealand but then moved to Australia with his parents during his teens. Urban began to learn guitar playing and was soon taking part in various competitions. In 1983, he took part in New Faces, an Australian talent show. Urban then started to make appearances in different television shows and that helped him make some noise in the country music scene prevalent in Australia at the time. He also began to perform at different festivals.

Breakthrough and Recognition

Keith Urban soon landed a record deal from EMI Australia and came out with his self-titled first album. He also went on to appear on “Breaking Ground-New Directions in Country Music,” a compilation record that earned an ARIA Award nomination.

Keith Urban then decided to shift to Nashville in the year 1992. He kicked off his journey by appearing on Mercury Blues, a rendition by Alan Jackson. Urban also collaborated with the likes of Toby Keith, 4 Runner, Charlie Daniels, Tim Wilson and Paul Jefferson in different capacities during the 1990s. He also formed his own band, The Ranch in 1997 and released one album with it.

It was time for him to take his bow as a solo artist and Urban came out with a self-titled record in the year 1999. The track Your Everything from the album went as high as the fourth spot in the country which made him the first ever musician from New Zealand to break into the Top 10 in the US. But for the Grace of God became Urban’s first track to reach the number one spot. The record itself went platinum in the United States and gold in Australia. Urban also won an Academy of Country Music Award and a Country Music Association Award.
