Early Life & Influences

The best thing about Imagine Dragons is that they do not limit their music to one genre. They fuse their signature alternative rock sound with elements of electropop, indie rock and hip-hop. The band is said to be inspired by artists like Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Nirvana, The Beatles, Muse and Harry Nilsson.

Imagine Dragons were formed in 2008 when two Brigham Young University students, Dan Reynolds and Andrew Tolman, decided to form a band. They added Dave Lemke, Andrew Beck and Aurora Florence to the lineup and churned out their first extended play ‘Speak to Me’ in the same year.

Florence and Beck quit the band shortly afterwards and they were replaced by guitarist, Wayne Sermon and pianist, Brittany Tolman. The group soon began to play gigs, but then Lemke left the band too and was replaced by Ben McKee. Imagine Dragons continued to play shows around Provo, Utah and after a while moved to Reynolds’ hometown, Las Vegas.

In 2009, Imagine Dragons recorded their eponymous EP. The extended play consisted of five songs out of which, Cover Up appeared in commercials for the MLS side Real Salt Lake. Imagine Dragons got their big break later in the year when they were asked to fill in for Train at the Bite of Las Vegas Festival. The band delivered a brilliant performance that night. On the back of that performance, the Las Vegas CityLife called them ‘Las Vegas’ Newest Must See Live Act.’

A year later, they came out with another EP, ‘Hell and Silence.’ This extended play caught the attention of the critics. It also featured a song All Eyes which was used in the episode, ‘Drop it Like It’s Hot (Part One)’ of the hit television series, ‘Degrassi: The Next Generation.’ On March 12, 2011, Imagine Dragons’ third extended play ‘It’s Time’ hit the markets. The EP was labeled ‘Best CD of 2011’ by the Vegas Seven Magazine. The Tolmans then left the group and they were replaced by Theresa Flaminio and Daniel Platzman.

Breakthrough & Recognition

Before putting out their debut record, ‘Night Visions,’ Imagine Dragons released their first single, It’s Time on August 18, 2012. The song reached the fourth spot on the Rock Airplay chart. It went on to sell in excess of three million copies in the United States and was nominated for an MTV Video Music Awards in the category of the ‘Best Rock Video.’ They have also performed the track live on a number of late-night talk shows like ‘Conan,’ ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,’ ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’ and ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’

One month later, ‘Night Visions’ arrived in the stores. The record not only won them a Billboard Music Award for the ‘Top Rock Album’ but was also awarded double platinum certification by the RIAA. In addition to It’s Time, the album featured eleven songs including, Demons and Radioactive both of which spent in excess of sixty weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. ‘Night Visions’ also received acclaim from the critics as USA Today gave it four stars out of five. Billboard called them ‘The Breakout Band of 2013’ because of the impact they had made with their first album.

In 2013, Imagine Dragons went on their first headlining tour. Called the ‘Night Visions Tour,’ the road trip saw the band perform one hundred and thirty seven shows in total across Europe, Oceania and North and South America. Apart from that, they also recorded songs like Ready Aim Fire, Who We Are and Battle Cry which featured in movies, ‘Iron Man 3,’ ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ respectively.

Notable Work and Album Releases

The band members then started to work on their next studio album. The result was, ‘Smoke + Mirrors’ which came out on February 17, 2015. It became their first record to top charts in the United States and the United Kingdom. The album gave three singles I Bet My Life, Shots and Gold out of which the latter appeared on the soundtrack of the video game, ‘NBA 2k17.’

Imagine Dragons have also performed at several award shows including Europe Music Awards and MuchMusic Video Awards. Moreover, they were invited as musical guests on ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 2014. The band has also gone on to sell more than nine million albums around the world.

In 2016, Imagine Dragons collaborated with stars Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign, Logic and X Ambassadors on the song Sucker for Pain which featured in the Hollywood film ‘Suicide Squad.’ The song was awarded double platinum certification by the RIAA. One year later, the band released its third and latest studio effort ‘Evolve.’ It peaked at the second spot on the Billboard 200 and was supported by three singles out of which Believer won a Teen Choice Award for the ‘Choice Alt-Rock Song.’
