Early Life and Career

Eminem was born as Marshall Bruce Mathers III, near Kansas City, Missouri. He was raised by his mother, Debbie Mathers-Briggs, along with his half-brother. Growing up in a largely black neighborhood on the East side of Detroit, Eminem was frequently bullied. However, soon he made a bunch of friends who realized that he had a knack for rhyming.

After failing the ninth grade thrice, Eminem dropped out of school and began entering competitions in the local freestyle throw-downs, with his crew, the Dirty Dozen. Soon after getting involved in the underground rap scene, the youngster released his debut solo album, Infinite in 1996, on the local Web Entertainment label. This album did not garner much attention; however, the next album was what got Eminem noticed.

Breakthrough with The Real Slim Shady EP

The Real Slim Shady EP was released in 1998 and managed to get the attention of none other than Dr. Dre. He was so impressed by Eminem’s abilities that he signed him on to his record label, Aftermath. This is where The Slim Shady LP was released. The LP debuted at Number Three on the pop chart and sold an impressive three million copies. In addition to that, it won the rising star his first Grammy for Best Rap Album. The catchy lead single from this album, “My Name Is” was a major success as well, and got Eminem a Grammy for the Best Rap Solo Performance.

Further Success

Riding on an early wave of success, Eminem released single “The Real Slim Shady”, which reached number four on the pop charts and number 11 on the R&B charts. “Stan”, the song that’s about a disturbed fan taking Eminem’s violent themes too seriously, was also a major hit.

In the summer of 2002, the MC returned with The Eminem Show, his third album, selling more than a million copies within the first week of its release. Eventually, it ended up selling over 10 million copies, and became Eminem’s second diamond certified album.

8 Mile Success

In November 2002, Eminem starred as himself in a movie called 8 Mile. The movie told the story of an aspiring MC in Detroit, and co-starred Kim Basinger, Mekhi Phifer and Brittany Murphy. The artist earned a lot of critical acclaim for his work in the movie and even more for its sound track, “Lose Yourself”. This song not only became Eminem’s first song to hit Number One on the Billboard Hot 100, but also earned him an Academy Award for the Best Original Song in 2003.

Artistry and Influences on Eminem’s Work

Eminem has cited several MCs as having influenced his work, including Ice-T, Melle Mel, LL Cool J, Rakim, Beastie Boys and Kool G Rap among others. As far as his style of rapping goes, Eminem uses varied and humorous subject matter and connects with his audience using a series of complex rhymes, bending words to make them rhyme, complex rhythms with clear enunciation and the use of melody and syncopation. His work has been defined as falling in the genre of horrorcore, hardcore hip hop and comedy hip hop.

Eminem is also known for the use of his famous alter ego, Slim Shady, in many of his tracks. In songs with Slim Shady, the themes are usually dark and violent, and tend to have a comic twist. Another character often heard of in Eminem’s songs is Ken Kaniff, a homosexual who makes fun of Eminem’s music.

Awards and Honors for Eminem

Over the years, Eminem has won an impressive 515 awards in total, and has been nominated 800 times. His major label debut album, The Real Slim Shady LP won him a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The Eminem Show also won Grammy awards and made Eminem the first artist to win the Best Rap Album award for three consecutive LPs. In total, he has won 15 Grammys in his career.

In 2003, the successful rapper won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for the Best Original Song for “Lose Yourself”, the soundtrack of 8 Mile that became the longest running No. 1 hip hop single.

Subsequent albums, Encore and Recovery were number one albums, achieving widespread commercial success and topping charts in several countries.
