Early Life and Career

Influenced by the famous, Harry Houdini, Angel developed interest in magic from a very young age. By fourteen, he was already performing at restaurants around his hometown. By the time he graduated from high school, he decided to pursue a career in this field. He started studying the art of magic and travelled to perform with other similar acts. In an attempt to develop his own unique style, Criss Angel chose to stay away from other magicians at this early stage. He appeared on television for the first time in 1994, where he was a part of a one-hour special ABC primetime series called Secrets.

One of his early fans, who helped him out a lot, was horror movie director, Clive Barker.

In 1998, Angel collaborated with the musician Klayton to combine magic with music and present a new form of entertainment. They released an album called Musical Conjurings from the World of Conjuring in the same year. Following this, the magician got to perform a 10-minute show at the Madison Square Garden.

Water Torture Cell – 2002

In August of 2002, Criss Angel performed one of his most iconic illusions – he spent 24 hours tied up in underwater in a water-torture cell, the size of a phone booth, in Times Square. He prepared for this trick in the backyard swimming pool of his neighbor. 24 hours prior to his iconic performance, Angel had fasted so that he won’t feel the need to use the bathroom. He went through 16 oxygen tanks for the duration of the trick. After the trick, the magician removed his own shackles and exited the water.

The Criss Angel Mindfreak Series

One of the major reasons behind Criss Angel’s fame is his 2005 series for A&E network called, Criss Angel Mindfreak. He was the creator, executive producer and director of this show that included multiple unique illusions like levitating, walking on water and walking up on the side of the Luxor Hotel. Other famous tricks include cutting himself in half in front of an audience, living through an exploding C4 Crate, making a Lamborghini disappear and floating between two buildings. In its third season, the show became the network’s top rated show, with over 1.5 million viewers. The show also gained considerable popularity in other parts of the world, including China.

Daily Variety praised this record-breaking show in the following words, "The stunts alone are impressive. But what makes the show fascinating are the down-home touches in which we see the kid from New York, who first honed his magic skills at the age of 6. Keenly aware of the camera at all times, Angel manages to offer some personality, especially where family is involved. Viewers follow the illusionist as he contemplates new and more dangerous stunts, while his crew, including his often-fretful brothers, offer insight as to what, other than ego, drives someone in this profession."

Criss Angel Believe

In addition to Mindfreak, Criss Angel ventured into other directions as well. In 2006, he collaborated with Cirque du Soleil to produce a show called Criss Angel Believe, which opened at the Luxor Las Vegas in 2008. Within a short amount of time, the show became the bestselling live magic show across the world. Even though the show opened to mixed reviews, it soon had critics praising it. The Toronto Star talked about the show saying, “The show is easily the most exciting thing now on stage in Vegas!”

Criss Angel Believe is expected to run through 2019.

Stage Shows

Other works of Criss Angel include the multiple stage shows he has been a part of. These include Criss Angel Magicjam, Mindfreak Live! and The Supernaturalists.

Angel has been recognized widely for his contributions to the entertainment industry. He won the International Magician Society’s Magician of the Year award five times and also got the honor of “Magician of the Decade”. He received the Louie Award for outstanding achievement in magic and was also a nominee for the prestigious Harry Houdini Award. In addition to all these, Angel is also the only man to have won the Merlin Magician of the Year Award twice – once in 2001 and then in 2004. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in July 2017.
