Early Life
Christina Maria Aguilera was born on December 18, 1980 in Staten Island, New York. Her mother was a musician and her father was in the United States Army. Because of her father’s job, Christina and her family were always moving around to places such as New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Japan. When Christina was six years old, her parents got a divorce, and she moved to Rochester, Pennsylvania with her mother and sister. It was there the young singer got involved with many talent shows and singing competitions. She won her first talent show when she was just eight years old, performing “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston. A few years later, in Aguilera’s early teen years, is when her career began to take off.
Beginnings of Career
When Aguilera was eleven years old she auditioned for The Mickey Mouse Club but did not meet the age requirements. She tried again when she was thirteen and was casted as a “Mouseketeer” alongside other future stars Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Ryan Gosling, and Keri Russell. The show was unfortunately cancelled after two years of her being on the show when she then moved to Japan with her mother. In Japan, Aguilera recorded a song with Japanese pop icon Keizo Nakanishi. The song was called “All I Wanna Do” and became a hit in Japan. After recording her first song, Aguilera sent in recordings of herself to Disney in an attempt to be selected to record the theme song for the animated film Mulan. Her efforts were rewarded and she was chosen to sing “Reflection” for the motion picture. “Reflection” got her noticed by RCA Records who signed her shortly after.
Christina Aguilera
In 1999, Aguilera recorded her first single, “Genie in a Bottle”, with RCA Records. It was a major success, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. To this day it has sold over 7 million copies worldwide. After the insane popularity of Aguilera’s single, she released her first studio album, Christina Aguilera, in August of 1999. The album also was number one on the Billboard 200, certified platinum eight times by the Recording Industry Association of America, and sold 14 million copies worldwide. This album featured hits like “What a Girl Wants” and “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)”. Due to the major success of this first studio album, Aguilera received her first Grammy in 2000 for Best New Artist. Two years late Aguilera decided to take more control of her public image and hopped on a collaboration with Pink, Mya, and Lil’ Kim. The hit pop collaboration was entitled “Lady Marmalade” and became one of the most famous female collaboration songs of the decade. The song won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2002.
Stripped
After the hit single “Lady Marmalade”, Aguilera released her fourth studio album, Stripped. The pop star continued to embrace her new edgy image with the release of Stripped. This was met by some controversy but otherwise was a complete success. It was released in October 2002 and to date had sold 12 million copies worldwide. It also was the second highest-selling album by a female US artist of the 2000s decade. After the release of Stripped, Aguilera dropped another hit single entitled “Beautiful”. “Beautiful” won a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2004 and also was listed number 52 by Rolling Stone on the 100 Best Songs of the 2000s list.
Back to Basics and Bionic
In 2006, the pop sensation released her fifth studio album, Back to Basics. This album strayed away from the sex appeal Stripped had and moved to a retro and blues style sound. Back to Basics was also very successful as it debuted as number one on the Billboard 200 and has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. The album also featured hit single “Ain’t No Other Man” which got Aguilera another Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Her sixth studio album was the least successful she had released at that point in her career. The album, entitled Bionic, has only sold 315,000 copies in the US; not even close to the chart impact of her other albums. At that point, Christina Aguilera shifted her career path slightly.
Burlesque,The Voice, and More
Aguilera was casted for Burlesque along with Cher and the film was released in November 2010. The film grossed $90 million and generally was perceived positively by viewers. Aguilera was on eight songs for the films soundtrack which eventually became certified gold. Six months later, the first season of The Voice aired on TV with celebrity coaches/judges Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Cee Lo Green. Aguilera remained on the show for the first three seasons. During this time, she and Maroon 5 collaborated on the hit single “Moves Like Jagger”. Aguilera returned to The Voice for seasons five and eight.
Christina Aguilera is now back again with her newest single entitled “Accelerate” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, and 2 Chainz. Her eighth studio album, Liberation is said to drop sometime before her ‘Liberation’ tour kicks off. This is the pop star’s first tour in 10 years and it is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
