About Aerosmith

Often referred to as “America’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band”, Aerosmith are the “Bad Boys from Boston”, known for their hit singles such as “Dream On” and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”, among others. The band, comprising of Steven Tyler, Joey Kramer, Joe Perry and others was formed in 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts.

The wildly successful group has sold more than 150 million records in its four-decade long career, with several gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums to its name. In addition to that the band has toured extensively throughout their career. Over 45 years, they have performed in more than 2000 concerts in 48 countries. And lucky for their fans, they are all set to perform again. They recently wrapped up their Aero-Vederci Baby! Tour, which saw them play in European countries from May to July 2017. This farewell tour had 17 dates in total with multiple sold out shows. Even though it was cut short, you still might have a chance to catch these legends live in action – all you need to do is keep yourself updated about the latest Aerosmith tickets.

Early Career

Aerosmith took its initial shape in 1971, after playing multiple local shows. Their first such gig was in Mendon, Massachusetts. Soon after that, they started getting some local success with live shows. After being impressed by their work, Clive Davis signed them on to Columbia Records in mid-1972 for $125,000. The first album by the band, a self-titled effort, was released in January 1973 and reached number 166 on Billboard. Even though the album sales were a little slow at the start, it managed to achieve gold status soon. The album was certified Platinum when the band achieved mainstream success nearly ten years later.

After extensive touring, Aerosmith released their second album, called Get Your Wings, in 1974. Even though this was a successful effort, it was their next album which made the band a household name in the country.

It was Aerosmith’s 1975 album, Toys in the Attic that turned out to be the breakthrough album for the group. It established them as international stars, comparable to the likes of the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. This album showed music critics that Aerosmith were not a Rolling Stones knock off group, but were in fact, a very unique band in their own right. Toys in the Attic was an instant success, with a re-released version of “Dream On” hitting number six on the charts.

Continued Success

After making a name for themselves in the industry, Aerosmith continued to ride on the wave of success for years to come. Their next album, Rocks, released in 1976, went platinum quickly and featured hit singles like “Last Child” and “Back in the Saddle”. Both this album and the one preceding it, have appeared on multiple lists such as the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list by Rolling Stone magazine. These albums have also been cited as inspiration by future rock bands such as Guns N’ Roses and Metallica.

Following the release of this album, the band members hit a rough patch as drug problems rose and tensions within the group mounted. Joe Perry left after a heated argument with Steven Tyler, only to return a few years later. Soon after reuniting, the band worked on another hit album, Permanent Vacation. This was released in 1987 and became their best-selling album in more than a decade.

Then came Pump, another highly successful work by the band. Released in 1989, the album had three top ten singles, “Janie’s Got a Gun,” “What It Takes” and “Love in an Elevator.” The album was a big critical success and ended up selling nearly 7 million copies. Aerosmith also won their first Grammy Award in the Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal category for the song “Janie’s Got a Gun”.

Debut at No. 1

In 1993, Aerosmith released the album, Get a Grip. This album ended up becoming their first work to debut at number one on the Billboard charts. “Livin’ on the Edge” and “Eat the Rich” were among the popular singles from this album. The album initially sold around 7 million copies in the first two and a half years, but soon after, ended up selling more than 20 million copies in the US, making it one of Aerosmith’s most successful works. The band also bagged two Grammy Awards for songs from this album.

“I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”

In 1998, Aerosmith released their most successful single to date – “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”. The song was written by Diane Warren and was featured in the film, Armageddon. It ended up becoming Aerosmith’s first and only single to debut at the top position on Billboard Hot 100, and remained there for an impressive four weeks. The song was also nominated for an Academy Award in 1999 and helped the band open up to an entire new generation.

Awards and Achievements

As the band continued to release hit songs and albums, they won many awards along the way. Aerosmith has received six American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, four Grammy Awards, two MTV Europe Music Awards and an impressive ten MTV Video Music Awards. In addition to that, the band has also bagged a People’s Choice Award, a Soul Train Music Award, two Teen Choice Awards, two Boston Music Awards and one MTV Movie Award. Out of a total 79 nominations, the band has won 32 awards in total.

In addition, Aerosmith have 25 gold albums, 18 platinum and 12 multi-platinum albums under their belt –  the success of this rock band truly knows no bounds. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and got listed on Rolling Stone’s and VH1’s lists for the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Tyler and Perry, the band’s main songwriters were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.

It breaks my heart to have left this tour early. The band has never played better. Just watch the 100,000 people at Rock in Rio," Tyler wrote before concluding, "We've been to Tel Aviv… to Russia… to Rio… and all the in between… I guess it's true what they say, 'That life's a pisser when eu're a peein'.'"
