5 Seconds of Summer are all about breaking stereotypes. While some may label them a pop-punk band, they have aspirations to be more than just that. Then there is that little matter of them being called a boy band, another thing that does not sit well with 5SOS.
Calum Hood, in an interview with the Rolling Stone said:
"It's just as isolating as being called a boy band, you know, being [called] a pop-punk band. I don't want to make just one type of music. I really want to evolve as a band with our sound. Bands like U2 have songs which are almost completely different genres, and that's what I love."
These young Australians are out to change the music scene and they are going to do it without caring about what other people have to say about them. That says a lot about their character and the self-confidence they have in their abilities to make it big.
The aim now is to perform in big stadiums. They want to establish themselves as a stadium band, much like one of their biggest inspirations, Green Day. Their last road trip, the “Sounds Live Feels Live Tour” saw them perform all over the world and close to seven hundred and fifty thousand fans bought 5 Seconds of Summer tickets to catch them live.
They are well on their way to becoming the superstars they have always wanted to be.
The Origins
5 Seconds of Summer was formed not too far back in the year 2011. Three friends, Calum Hood, Michael Clifford and Luke Hemmings were students at the Norwest Christian College. They also had more or less the same taste in music. They started off by uploading videos on YouTube. Their cover of Next to You, the Chris Brown track amassed in excess of a whopping six hundred thousand views. Ashton Irwin then joined the line-up in December of 2011 and 5SOS was on its way.
Quite a few big labels began to show interest in 5 Seconds of Summer and as a result of that they agreed to a recording deal with Sony ATV Music Publishing. They came out with their debut EP “Unplugged” and it went on to make quite an impact in their native Australia and that too without it being promoted on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. Unplugged went to the third spot on the iTunes charts in their native country and cracked the Top 20 in Sweden and New Zealand as well.
Collaborations with One Direction
Their popularity began to grow outside of Australia when Louis Tomlinson of One Direction posted a YouTube video of 5SOS covering 1D’s track Gotta Get Out. Their association with One Direction however did not end there. 5SOS released their debut single Out of My Limit in November of 2012 and its video link was tweeted by Niall Horan.
That was followed by a tour of London. As part of the trek they went on to work with the likes of Jake Gosling, McFly, James Bourne, Steve Robson, Scouting for Girls, Kaiser Chiefs and Nick Hodgson.
On Valentine’s Day in 2013, an announcement was made that 5 Seconds of Summer will travel with One Direction for 1D’s “Take Me Home Tour.” They also went on to tour Australia while taking a break from Take Me Home Tour. In November of the same year, they signed with Capitol Records and then released their first major label single titled She Looks So Perfect on February 5, 2014.
A Few Hit Singles and Debut Album
The very next month it was announced that 5SOS will once again team up with One Direction as a supporting act on the latter’s “Where We Are Tour.” They followed that up by releasing an EP “She Looks So Perfect” in April, 2014, which reached second spot on the Billboard 200. They weren’t done just yet though and released the single Don’t Stop in the UK. It went to the second spot on the UK Singles Chart and peaked at the first place in four different countries.
5 Seconds of Summer than came out with their debut self-titled album on June 27, 2014 and it went straight to the top spot on the US Billboard 200 on its debut. That also made them the first act from Australia to reach number one in the US with a debut album. It went on to reach the number one spot in an astonishing thirteen countries and cracked the Top 10 in twice as many nations. “5 Seconds of Summer” also won a Kerrang! Award in the process.
5 Seconds of Summer released the track Amnesia in July and then in October came out with Good Girls which amassed well over an astonishing two million views in just forty eight hours. They wrapped up the year by releasing their live album titled “LiveSOS” on December 15, 2014.
Headlining Tours and Second Album
5 Seconds of Summer then hit the road in 2015 for their first major road trip as headlining acts. The road trip was titled “Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour” and it took them to North America, New Zealand, Australia and Europe.
Their next album was titled “Sounds Good Feels Good” and it hit the music stores on October 23, 2015. The album peaked at the first spot on the US Billboard 200. It also went to the number one position in the UK, Norway, Ireland, Netherlands and Canada. The critics were left raving about it. AllMusic, The Guardian, Rolling Stone and Billboard all gave it three stars out of five while it received four stars out of five from Alternative Press.
5SOS then hit the road once again for their second headlining tour in 2016 which was named “Sounds Live Feels Live World Tour.” They played shows in Asia, North American, Europe and Oceania as part of the trek and performed in front of packed stadiums and different venues everywhere.
5 Seconds of Summer Tour Tickets
5 Seconds of Summer have made the announcement that they are working on their third album and their fans cannot wait for it to come out. The release also means that there is a big chance that 5SOS will hit the road once again to promote it. Judging by their last two tours, get ready to see demand for 5 Seconds of Summer tour tickets to go through the roof when they go on tour.
