Background and Early Days
Hauser and Sulic met at a master class in Croatia during their teen years. Sulic, the younger one, was enrolled at the Academy of Music in Zagreb and was studying in Vienna at the time. He later entered the Royal Academy of Music in London for advanced studies. Hauser, on the other hand, went to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Their initial rise to fame is attributed to a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”, which became a hit on YouTube. After receiving more than three million views in the first two weeks, the two cellists became somewhat of an instant sensation. They initially faced some financial difficulties, despite the success of their music in the UK. After meeting with one of Hauser’s friends, who happened to be a director, the duo made a video for their version of “Smooth Criminal”. It is from that point on that their career took off.
Professional Career and Breakthrough
After getting the attention of major music labels, 2Cellos signed on to Sony Masterworks. The duo finished recording their self-titled debut album in May 2010, which was released on 19th July, 2011. This album covered songs of major artists such as U2, Nine Inch Nails, Sting, Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, Coldplay, Kings of Leon and Muse. The duo chose songs that could be adapted into a cover playable only on two cellos. Before releasing the album, 2Cellos released the single “Welcome to the Jungle” – a Guns N’ Roses cover, which was very well received.
