Dubbed Atlanta’s most respected new rapper, 21 Savage is a young entrant into the world of music. Starting out in 2013, this 24-year old hip hop star is best known for his mixtapes, The Slaughter Tape and Slaughter King. He was born as Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph but is better known by his stage name, 21 Savage. In a short span of time, 21 Savage has managed to become a popular teen icon whose shaky and intoxicating musical energy has gotten him a lot of fame, especially among the younger audiences. Currently, the artist is out on his Numb the Pain Tour that will see him perform in multiple cities across the US. The upcoming shows are going to take place towards the end of October up till the end of November. You wouldn’t want to miss this talented young artist, performing live in concert. Get your 21 Savage tickets at the earliest!
Early Life and Influences
The young rapper not only looks the part, but has also lived it. He was born in Dominica and was raised by his mother. He had had it tough from the very beginning, falling in trouble often with the law and getting barred from attending schools in the DeKalb County School District due to gun possession. He then began attending schools around the metropolitan area around Atlanta, but was soon sent to a Youth Detention Center. After that, his life went into a downward spiral of robbing and petty crimes as he became a member of the Bloods gang. Things got worse when he got shot six times and his friend died on his 21st birthday, in an attempted robbery.
It was around this time that 21 Savage began writing music and rapping. He crafted dark trap melodies like “Picky” produced by DJ Plugg. The kind of energy that he brought with his music resonated with so many youngsters around his town and helped him make a solid foundation for his musical career. Soon he was noticed by Key! an Atlanta-based underground mainstay. He gave 21 Savage career advice, along with introducing him to some music connections and local producers. He talked about how local producers showed a great deal of respect to those artists with genuine stories to tell in their music. Perhaps this is why 21 Savage’s music is mostly about killing and robbing. All of these come from his experiences over the course of his life.
With this platform of producers backing him up, 21 Savage released The Slaughter Tape. This tape helped establish him in the local music scene, with songs such as “Gang,” “Million Dollar Lock” and “Pimp.” Metro Boomin praised 21 Savage’s latest effort.
21 Savage – The Name
The unique name of the rapper is part random and part meaningful. He talks about it saying, “21, that’s my gang, that’s my crew. Savage came out of nowhere. I was just looking for an Instagram name”. The rapper is deeply involved with his local community and takes family very seriously as well. In fact, he has a small dagger tattoo on his forehead that has been at the center of a lot of speculation since his early days in the industry. The tattoo is actually a tribute to his younger brother, Tay Man, who was killed. Tay Man himself had gotten the tattoo as a representation of the group they were in. When he died, 21 Savage got the same design inked on to his forehead as a sign of respect.
The Music of 21 Savage
After releasing The Slaughter Tape in May 2015, 21 Savage released a collaboration EP with Sony Digital, called Free Guwop. It was meant as a tribute to one of 21 Savage’s biggest influences, Gucci Mane. A few months after this, the rapper released his second mixtape called Slaughter King.
In July of 2016, the artist worked with an Atlanta-based record producer, Metro Boomin and released a joint EP, called EP Savage Mode. This was the breakthrough EP for the singer as it got international fame and peaked at number 23 on the Billboard 200. It became the highest charting EP of 21 Savage to date. In addition to that, the single “X” from the EP that featured Future, went Platinum. It became 21 Savage’s first platinum record ever and was a major milestone for the young artist. In the start of 2017, 21 Savage announced that Epic Records had signed him and he will be releasing music under them from now on. He soon released his debut studio album called Issa Album. It peaked at number 2 on the US Billboard 200 and the single “Bank Account” from it, reached the top 20 on Billboard’s Hot 100.
