Early Life & Influences
Born in 1977 as Tauheed Epps in College Park, Georgia, 2 Chainz started listening to hip-hop when he was young and cites stars like Too Short, E-40, Kanye West and Birdman as his musical influence. Upon graduating from Alabama State University, he decided to give rap music a shot and soon, formed a band, Playaz Circle with his friend from high school, Earl Conyers in 1997. The duo started performing around their hometown and in 2002, spawned their independent record, ‘United We Stand, United We Fall.’
Epps and Conyers later caught the eye of the three-time Grammy winner and movie star, Ludacris who signed them to his record label, ‘Distributing Tha Peace.’ The group then took some help from the esteemed producers like Buckwild, Bigg D, Jay-R and Drumma Boy and churned out their debut studio effort, ‘Supply & Demand’ in 2007. The album received mixed response from the critics and peaked at the first spot on the Top Rap Albums.
After a gap of two years, Playaz Circle returned with their sophomore record, ‘Flight 360: The Takeoff.’ Although the record featured guest appearances from Lil Wayne, Ludacris and Cee-Lo Green, it received little success on the charts and reached seventy fourth spot on the Billboard 200. This persuaded 2 Chainz to focus on his solo career and in 2012, the Good Drank rapper announced that he will be dropping his debut solo album on August 14th.
Breakthrough & Recognition
According to the schedule, 2 Chains finally released his much awaited debut solo effort, ‘Based on a T.R.U. Story.’ The record enjoyed massive national popularity as it landed at the top spot on the Billboard 200. It also collected positive feedback from the critics and was included in the list, ’40 Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2012’ by Spin. In addition, the album was certified platinum by the RIAA and earned him his first Grammy Award nomination for ‘Best Rap Album.’
‘Based on a T.R.U. Story’ consisted of thirteen well-crafted songs out of which he put out three as singles, I’m Different, No Lie and Birthday Song. The latter two were collaborative efforts with Drake and Kanye West and they topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Whereas, the former achieved double platinum status in the United States and was used in a commercial for Adidas and Champs Sports.
On September 10, 2013, 2 Chainz came out with his second album, ‘B.O.A.T.S II: Me Time.’ The album wowed the critics and made the Rolling Stone’s list of the ‘Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2013.’ Plus, it received four stars out of five from USA Today. The record climbed the second spot on the Billboard 200 and offered two singles out of which, Feds Watching was ranked at twenty third spot on XXL’s list of the ’25 Best Songs of the Year.’
Album Releases & Notable Work
For his next studio project, 2 Chainz recorded eight out of twelve songs with Lil Wayne and released his third album, ‘ColleGrove’ on March 4, 2016. The record received 66/100 rating from Metacritic and was supported by three singles. Moreover, it charted at the second and fourth spots on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Billboard 200 respectively.
A year later, 2 Chainz became the talk of town again when his fourth studio LP, ‘Pretty Girls Like Trap Music’ reached the market. It instantaneously earned the approval of the critics and was included in Complex’s list of the ‘The Best Albums of 2017.’
‘Pretty Girls Like Trap Music’ climbed the second spot in the US and offered a platinum selling single, 4 AM which featured Travis Scott.
